East TN is white trash, dirt poor. It's West Virginia without coal jobs. Dolly has done more to support / bring jobs to East TN than anyone else.
No doubt Pigeon Forge is a huge tourist trap. I think Gatlinburg still has some nice charm to it.

I dont get it. Even stopping at gas stations and grocery stores in and around Branson, that is a totally different version of white trash

I like staying at Elkmont and spending most of my time there.
Its fine to go in to GBurg or PF to eat. All of the other touristy crap has zero appeal to me.
After the fire up few years ago,, Gatlinburg had somewhat lost its craft/arts aesthetician and gone full out trashy. Lots of extra ratoo parlors, head shops and vape stores.....it didn't used to be like that. It was always a tourist trap but more family oriented
Pigeon Forge was always the lesser of the two and now it seems like it's built out a lot more, and while still full of junk, also has a lot more newer developments that aren't horrendous eyesores.
Either way....the whole point of visiting that area is to camp, hike, and enjoy the national park. Not stay in town and trash it up and maybe drive through Cades Cove once at 10mph hoping to see a bear.
