Pigeon Forge & Gatlinburg are trashy AF

My kids wanted to ride roller coasters over fall break, so we were easily talked into joining a friend’s family to the Smokies for a few days.
It turns out that Pigeon Forge is basically a weird hodgepodge of beach, mountain, pirate, gocart, mini golf, t-shirt shops, and sh!tty restaurants which are ravenously devoured by fatties. Just pure empty calorie commercialsm.
I love the Smokies. I have backpacked the AT from one end of GSMNP to the other a few times. But this Pigeon Forge is just totally sh!t. It’s 100% of the very worst things about tourist traps.
I’m betting a good many locals here absolutely hate Dolly Parton for destroying this area.

Ever been to Panama City Beach? PF is the same for the mountains. Dollywood is nice and there are some good shows, but you need to go to Townsend or Bryson City for the quieter side of the Smokies.

It was like that long before Dollywood got there. It was theme park before she bought it. It was Goldrush something when I was a young kid and the Silver Dollar City. While Dolly may have increased the traffic and more crap may have been built in the area the die was set well before her.

The most shocking thing to me is that there are a bunch of RV parks full of permanent camper setups.
I guess those folks love pretending they live in a cheesy carnival.

I've talked to several workers at Dollywood and other places and never heard an unkind word about Dolly. Probably half were related to her in some way or else had a close friend who was. I heard several stories of her coming to weddings or helping out in some way.
But yeah, Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge are tourist traps, but there are other places to stay if you want to avoid that and still enjoy the mountains. We usually stay near Townsend.

Agree with pigeon forge but Gatlinburg isn’t bad. Touristy a little? Yeah but not over the top.
I think the allure of those towns for some is the ability to do some activities for the kids and get out in nature. Sorry, not matter how much I like hiking, my kids are not gonna wanna do that all day.

I haven’t been in PF in about 30 years.
I usually access the Smokies through Townsend.
