If done well it's OK.
I call em Philly turns bc years ago before the advent of flashing yellow / turn arrows / left turn lanes the only way you get to turn left for blocks and blocks in Philly is to plant yourself in the middle of the intersection.
But, when it turns yellow and the oncoming traffic stops, you turn.
Land of the hunter / hunted - it's tough out there.
I call em Philly turns bc years ago before the advent of flashing yellow / turn arrows / left turn lanes the only way you get to turn left for blocks and blocks in Philly is to plant yourself in the middle of the intersection.
But, when it turns yellow and the oncoming traffic stops, you turn.

you have the right of way in that scenario until the light turns red

I went ballistic at a guy that did that last week. He crossed a lane that was the on ramp to I20 and got stuck blocking the entire lane. My light turned green so I crossed the intersection and sat there calling him everything I could think of that was degrading. As I passed him I was still inventing cuss words, he actually yelled back at me and was convinced he had done nothing totally stupid. And yeah, he was a Democrat.

I've had morons get mad and lay on the horn because I won't go into an intersection on a green light when traffic is stopped on the other side.
I don't get mad. I get a satisfaction knowing I'm at least 20 points of IQ smarter than they are. 40 points for the ones that get mad and drive around me and wind up stuck in the intersection behind said stopped traffic.

It's probably my biggest driving pet peeve. I've always said that after I retire, when I'm a good ol' ripe age, I'm going to T-bone the frick out of one of these arse holes. And when the cop arrives on the scene, I'm going to play the "old man" card, "gee officer, I just don't know, I think that feller ran a red light. I know my light turned green and I took off. Then BAM, I hit him."
