There’s also not been a single country in the world that has been able to lower obesity rates. Slow it down maybe but the world continues to get fatter and fatter and it’s sad.
Yes it is. I'm in my early 30s, and I'm seeing the effects of years of obesity in my aunts and uncles who have eaten terribly with no concern for their health.
How many heart bypass procedures need to happen to people in someone's life before they realize they are killing themselves?
I've an uncle who has had multiple procedures (bypass, stent placements in his heart and legs) and he still eats like shite and has no intention of changing. He's 66 and 300+ lbs. My cousins are terrified because they know he's a ticking time bomb. And yet both he and my aunt still eat garbage food everyday.
It's selfish. He may not care, but we do because we love him. It makes me so angry.

I’m also amazed at the amount of not just overweight but flat out obese poor people. If you’re poor, shouldn’t affording food be a struggle?

We went to Dollywood and of course they also rented out mobility scooters for the obese and these thigns were high tech, like they had canopy shade structures attached and everythign.
The movie Wall-E was prophetic. And people will be freaking glad to jump in a pod as long as it’s serving them food and playing lewd TV series.

Sugar sweetened beverages are a major culprit. We're drinking more calories now than we're eating, and those calories are from straight refined sugar.
I don't eat fast food and haven't in a long time but in a pinch the other day I had to eat something so I went to Wendy's.
I was literally shocked when I ordered a Medium drink and had basically a liter sized cup. I asked the drive through person if that was a medium and she confirmed it. No way a person should drink that much soda in one meal. I can't imagine what is a large or XL these days.

Coastal areas vs the interior are completely different worlds.
Wait so places where you routinely take off your clothes and walk around in bathing suits have fewer day people?

A box of little Debbies costs a dollar.

It's about this size:

It used to be only Jack in the Box that had this weird sizing. I remember as a high schooler getting a medium drink and it being massive. Now it seems like almost everyone has gone that route. I think McDonalds still has a traditional medium cup, but they do all size soft drinks for $1 all the time so most people get the largest.
I was raised only allowed to drink zero calorie soft drinks, so I'm not really concerned with the size of the cup. EDIT - But it blows my mind that people drink calories that aren't alcoholic.

I try to avoid soft drinks but when I do get one it's a zero cal as well so the size doesn't bother me in that regard. It's just ridiculous to think people consume that much sugar in one drink, though.

Institute a Fat tax and apply it to the national debt.

Same here. We were allowed unsweet tea and some juice from time to time. I'm 47 and still won't drink a regular soda. Crap is nasty.

This is the counter-intuitive thing. The world's food supply has risen drastically in quality (in terms of caloric content and availability, not any measure of what might be considered healthy). The limbic system in the brain, though, still thinks we're foraging all day to eat enough shoots and grubs to get enough calories to survive. It still rewards you with a nice little feel good hit of dopamine when you eat things like sugars and fats because, when you're foraging for shoots and grubs to survive, those are things that will greatly increase your chances of getting enough calories so you don't starve.
Processing food has become cheap. REALLY cheap. Where something like chocolate was once a massive luxury, available only to the ultra wealthy, it's now a common and cheap commodity. The food supply has exploded due to mass production and price has gone down.
Since food processors that market to the masses have to compete against each other and they know that you still have that limbic system very deeply intwined in the mammalian parts of your brain, they increasingly use fats and sugars in the hope that you will choose their product to press your dopamine button. Caloric content per unit volume goes up, and we take in more calories per meal as a result. This compounds the problem because even if you don't seek out the dopamine from fat and sugar, our brains haven't caught up to our food production and your brain is still telling you to seek out a certain volume of food because that's what you need to survive. You eat that much paired with the higher caloric quality of food, and you can overeat, even without the dopamine feedback loop coming into play.
Short answer is that mass production means cheap and cheap means high in fat and sugar to entice you to buy, and your brain is still, at its core, driven by basic reptilian and mammalian drives for survival.

Agreed. Sometimes nothing hits the spot like a Diet Dr. Pepper with the "Sonic ice."
