The smartest thing my sister has done with her son is convince him sparkling water is a pop drink.
In comparison to sodas it wins hands down and is almost the same as water health wise. He considers it a treat and no sugar, syrup etc.

Rich and fatty foods has nothing to do with it. It’s simple- calories in > calories out. People eat higher caloric foods in the south and don’t work off those calories.
Portions has a lot to do with it. A lot.

People on higher fat diets eat less.
The fat triggers a sense of being full.

I just couldn't get over how fat everyone was.
I just got back from Disney and can confirm this. It’s amazing how many obese people are in this country.
Side note: why do obese people like going to Disney World? You walk 10+ miles, it’s typically pretty hot, and you’re on your feet all day. Some use scooters but some are walking around. It was a head scratcher

It is obscene how many people are morbidly obese.

You're generally right but not all calories are created equal. When you're talking about getting calories from refined carb sources (white rice, bleached flours, table sugar, etc.) that's worse for you than getting calories from whole foods: rolled oats, brown rice, vegetables, whole meats, etc.
Your body's response to the refined calorie is going to be a blood sugar spike, followed by an insulin response. This in turn makes us more hungry. Doing this over and over again can cause insulin resistance which creates a host of health issues.
Whole foods limit that spike and crash by releasing their energy over a longer period of time, making us feel more satiated.
Long story short: 150 calories from a handful of sour patch kids is definitely not the same as 150 calories from broccoli.

Not doubt there are large people everywhere but it's just so much more common in the South.
It’s really not. I travel the all over the US, but the Midwest and Northeast extensively. The only times I have noticed a thinner populace is when I’ve been out West. Once you get past Nebraska. Lots of fatties in Nebraska.

As others have said, the type of calories certainly do matter.
Have you ever eaten your typical cheap "chinese" food you get on every corner and wonder why you're hungry 30 minutes or so later?
white rice + all the sugar dumped in the food = blood sugar spike from hell.

It's always funny to me when I was living in Cali or just traveling in general and I land back in DFW or IAH on my way to Lake Charles and the sheer size of the average person changes.
We vacationed in Montana 2 summers ago and it was amazing how healthy everyone was compared to here. All the convenience stores only sold small fountain drinks. A Big Gulp was nonexistent.

Buying pre made/prepared healthy meals is expensive. Buying the raw material required to eat healthy is not. There is a distinct difference.
Also notice you don’t see a lot of fat, active people. It’s fat lazy people. These people want everything done FOR them

Don’t forget beans and rice! shite is cheap! Veggies all in all are cheap. You just need to take the time to meal prep. I spend a few hours on Sunday prepping or making my food for the week.
Rice, lentil pasta, homemade sauces, sweet potato wedges, etc.
I hate fat, lazy people.

While this may be true, its a lot easier to go and workout or go for a run if you eat Chicken, rice and veggies as opposed to something loaded with fat and sugar. I can eat half a pound of chicken and run 3 miles, if I eat a snickers and try to run, its going to come back up.
Hired a nutrition coach, and a typical day for a cut looks like 140C 275P 90F

Looks like we have some fatty in size 42 jeans downvoting everything.
Get off your arse and go to the grocery after you go to the gym. Life’s too short to go through fat and lazy.
