Tell that to this poor fella. I bet he'd swim through a small sea of jellyfish if he could get his arm back.

I go to the panhandle beaches every year and that’s why I stay my arse on the beach .

I'm old, but I think that it is obscene to video that instead of jumping into action to do something to help. Either try to grab a boat to get out there, call 911, etc. Anything that you could do help is better than standing there with your cell phone.

Swimming around Marinas can definitely be dangerous. People always dumping food so it draws more visitors. In Louisiana, it’s Gators.

Was this part of an exercise or was he out during his free time? When I lived there you would see a group of Navy swimmers swimming back to the base from wherever they were dropped off that morning. Always seemed stupid to me to be swimming under the Hathaway Bridge (or any other structure).

Eons ago when I was stationed down at Tyndall, we always heard about the sharks the pilots would see on their low passes over that bay. Especially in the cut/channel going to the ocean.
Have snorkeled in very shallow water around the island there gathering scallops but no way in hell I would get anywhere near the channel itself.
Nature doesn’t care who/what you are. In the ocean you are either predator or prey

I'm flailing away
Set an open course for the Panama City sea
'Cause I've got to be free
Free to face the shark that's ahead of me

I saw that video here on OT my first time visiting the board. It’s been all downhill from there.

That shark went shark on the poor guy. They are all over the place close to the beach and in the bay. Even a nibble can make it a very bad day. A full on attack is life changing or ending.
Choose when and where you swim wisely. He obviously chose poorly.

He’s swimming way too far out. Nobody should be swimming far enough out to where you are close to a buoy
They have EOD units there and occasionally SDV folks, those all do open water swims regularly.

Even with the absurd number of gators in La now and despite the recent news story gator attacks here are astronomically rare.

A know it all dumbass I work with was telling me the other day that "sharks are basically puppies."
he must get all those videos of the chick that swims with tiger sharks and appears to be way to confident and familiar with them. She's due a reckoning at some point. Kinda like Steve Irwin finally got.
Not saying either deserved/deserves it. But eventually you get got.
I'd assume this latest victim got hit by a bull shark as they are so numerous. I've never heard anyone refer to a bull shark as a puppy.

"He was 44 years old."
"That's a ripe old age for a crocodile hunter."

I did triathlons when I lived there so I did multiple open water swims a week. My rule of thumb was to stay as far away from the Pass as possible.
Open water swims are a challenge in Florida because of the sharks in saltwater and alligators in freshwater. I'd still choose the ocean over the lakes any day.

I agree with the sentiment, but how do you know that is not happening around the person filming. I am sure the person filming was not the only person there.
