re: One thing I really miss about the old days is a good menswear store

I used to go to Castner Knott at the mall. Older dude in a 3-piece suit waited on me. I got the feeling he was working because he needed to, not because he wanted to. Off the rack suits but decent quality.

I believe that gentleman has more than a full break. In fact, I might call that a flood.

I’m calling bullshite. What store are you referring to?
Greenville, Texas, with 24000 population, had a Men's Store in the 70's. You could get nice clothes. The guys would find a suit and perfectly make any adjustments that you needed.
A true men's store is awesome. I think Shreveport still has On Time Fashions, which used to have wild funky clothes but it has settled down into more traditional suits.

Who wears a suit just because? No one. Unless it's an occasion or business, they aren't making much money. You open a men's store and see how well you do.

I remember the old Toggery Shop in downtown Hammond and there was a men’s store right up the escalator in the old Hammond Square Mall. Can’t think of the name

A well trained guy (after trying to impress you by guessing your size), can guide you on the pros and cons of English vs Italian vs American cut suits and how they look on you and what sort of messaging they send to the people around you. They'll ask about how/where you wear them to guide on suit weight (like super 100s vs 110s, etc). They'll further guide you on what brands and cuts look best on you... 15 years ago or so, I thought I might like a Brioni suit. The guy working with me didn't think it was a great idea (I can't remember why) and when I tried it on, sure enough, it just didn't look as good on me as other mid to high end brands.
How long after did y'all start dating?

Houston has at least Sid Mashburn and Norton Ditto. Good people at both.

Ron Alexander in Funroe is my go to. Todd Garland's in BR used to be Frattastic.

there were definitely experienced tailors everywhere. It was very easy to get a suit altered, at least.
No shite. I bought some sport coats and a suit online from Jos A Bank thinking I could get them tailored locally. No dice. The one old woman I actually found couldn't get to it for three months. It seems the few seamstresses there are cater strictly to the prom dress and wedding dress crowd.
I ended up taking the hour trip to the big city to get Jos A Bank to tailor their own clothing.

I’m sure I will get down voted by all the sophisticated shoppers on here, but the last suit I bought was from Dillards in Baton Rouge. It is a very good quality suit and the salesman did a great job picking out all the other accessories to go with it. The wife approved and she is definitely the sophisticated shopper between the two of us. It has made three weddings so far.

I’m not really aware of any in Atlanta otter than Brooks Brothers, which can handle the suit part, but isn’t really the kind of spot OP’s referencing. Got any recs?

And RIP to Mr. Frank. Glad the store and his legacy continues.
Frank McLavy? He died? Oh shite when?
Great guy and always enjoyed talking with him or having a drink while shopping.
Damn that sucks.

You shouldn’t get downvoted for this. I consider myself a pretty “sophisticated” consumer of nice menswear and I would 100% shop there if I thought I’d find the right option. My problem is I’m hard to fit off the rack so I usually end having to get suits re-cut.
I’ve bought three Hickey Freeman suits from there and had them tailored over the course of the years. The New Year’s Day sale they used to have was legit. I think they stopped having that sale though.

We have Great Scott here in Jackson. Good stuff. Nice suits, carries Peter Miller, George Roth, and other good lines. As Polo has gone down, I find myself buying more from there.
