Wasn't it Anthony Bourdain who tripped out about how you can get things like etoufee at gas stations here, when that's a pretty sophisticated dish?

The coastal smugness oozes through the article.
I mean, it focuses on a photography book by a woman from Mississippi, and the author of the piece is based in the South. Sometimes I think some of you are looking to be offended by something.

Gas station corn dogs in a small town are the best. The big ones where you can see a reflection coming off the batter.
Runner up is burritos from a west Texas Allsups.

This woman seriously needs to get out. Serving food at gas stations isn't just a novelty to be found in the South. You can find them (at least) as far north as Pennsylvania.

Best tomato gravy I’ve ever had is at the Satsuma, AL Chevron, and I will stop there every chance I get from here on out.
A different story; One time I was passing through this town and stopped for fuel. As I was pumping gas, I noticed this particular gas station had an unusual amount of cars. Upon further inspection, they were waiting in line for the breakfast hot bar. You damn right I got a plate.

I'm sure if they went to a gas station outside the metropolitan just 40 miles West they'd find gas station with food. This is dumb.

Chicken on a Stick at the Super Junior in Vicksburg is pretty good.

The author of the book is Kate Medley, she lives in Durham and is a friend/acquaintance of my wife. She went to Ole Miss. The book is called Thank You Please Come Again. It is really rather interesting to see all the small town gas stations that sell such a variety of food. I am used to the ones around me but never paid much attention to the meta picture. Someone mentioned Buc ee's, the book specifically doesn't look at the more polished food outlets like that. It is about the places you might not even notice passing by but the locals have been going to for decades.

If it's not up their own arse, they haven't heard about it. They think they're cultured too.

One time at the cabin in Idaho I grilled up some boudin for breakfast. Keep in mind it was probably -5 or -6 at the time.
Needed the vehicle filled up before we headed out for the day so I just grabbed a couple links and drove down to the gas station. I'm standing there pumping gas filling up, eating a link of boudin.
This guy on the other side of the pump looks at me a few times and finally asks "man I gotta know what that is you're eating?"
I explained that it's boudin and that we're from south Louisiana. Then I have to explain what boudin is.
I ended up giving the guy a link of it.
I think that's proof that you can get good food at the gas station outside of the South

New Yorkers will eat a seven day old hot dog or a halal gyro out of a bacteria laden push cart all day long, but a gas station is beneath them.

Some of the best food can be had at gas stations here in Mississippi
And usually it’s by a sweet old black lady and they’ll say “ have a good day baby” and It makes me smile every freaking time

There are a ton of small rural towns where the local gas station is the only restaurant around. Usually because a gas station alone or restaurant alone wouldn’t survive but 2 in 1 does
