Also many of these roles can't get past the fact my job title has never been "data scientist" in the past, even though data science work is exactly what I have done.

So change your title on the resume

Who the hell is going to call you out on that? Titles are just random and change from company to company anyway

it was a meeting where people who were looking for work came to meet others in the same situation for support and to network.

That would be like if indeed was just a bunch of job seekers only with no employees. What’s the point of a bunch of unemployed people trading business cards?

I’d almost guarantee you there is a 3PL (CH Robinson, TQL, XPO, etc) hiring in your city. If you can burn down phones and talk to people that’s about all you’ll need.

Maybe not the most ideal or even desired job field but the field is on fire right now.

I know the thread is at 9 pages, but I’ve been there man.

Back in 2016, I opted out of a PhD program just before it started to move back home. Thought I was hot shite due to getting accepted into so many great universities, but when it was all said and done, I had nothing.

We lived with my parents for 8 months. My wife worked. My parents worked. My son went to preschool. I spent 4 months getting NOTHING. Felt like a total loser.

I used a side skill of mine (music) to start taking on lessons and focusing on getting gigs. Got some income and enough to move out. Picked up an adjunct teaching job at a community college. Eventually got a full time job.

Now we’re as financially stable as we were thought we could be.

It’ll work out. Just keep building skills, applying, and as someone suggested, go to the fricking gym.

Do you have friends, family or former co-workers at any place you want to work? I was recruited to my job by former co-workers. There are now 11 of us here. Networking is important. People like helping other people.

I don't know how they are handling it now, but there are networking groups all over the country, where you can meet people that work at other companies, or maybe they know a guy... it is also a place to get help with interview skills and maybe fluff up your resume.

It's intimidating, for sure, but if you have been searching for 5+ months, it's time to try a different approach.

Good luck!

Congrats on you making this happen.

You do realize there is now only one piece of the puzzle left for you to truly be happy?

Realign your fandom to the Bengal Tigers, leave the dark side….

You’ll thank me later. And your posterity will as well.

This. It’s resume writing 101 stuff. You don’t put your positions on your resume you had, you list your qualifications for what position you are looking to be hired for. Make a resume that will get you interviews, then interview in a manner that will get you the job. It’s not lying, it’s modifying your self and resume to what people are looking for.

Go into interviews with confidence, eagerness to work hard, and a knowledge of what the position requires and the company needs you to accomplish. That’s how you land a job.

One job that rejected me a couple weeks ago, I had a phone screen, 2 hour long Zoom interviews, and then a 2 hour panel interview where I talked to 4 people. Then they tell me the next day I am not being selected because I didn't have a masters degree. First of all, why did you waste my time and yours when you simply could have looked at my resume to find out I didn't have one? Second, why does it matter? It was clear I aced every step of the process along the way. Who gives a shite if I don't have a masters?

Have you thought about getting a masters? I just got mine and landed a job in the data science field. Seems like most of them require it nowadays. Takes about 10 months and some change to get the degree. Dunno how attainable this is for you at this point in your life though.

Yes, I have a full time job that I hate at a company that I hate for shitty pay and with shitty hours that actively harm my relationship with my family.

shite, tell people you're "proud of your indigenous peoples heritage", if they ask further, your great grandmother was full-blood Cherokee. This makes you 1/8th and legal for federal recognition. If they ask for proof, sue them.

As a retired nurse I can’t even relate to all this.First job I was hired before I graduated.I was recruited to my 2’nd job, eventually went back to 1’st job.Moved to another job and eventually went back to 1’st job from which I retired. After I retired I got 4 job offers,2 before my last day.Never wrote a resume in my life.
My NP wife and her Dr. boss are retiring end of year, she has been offered 3 jobs already.1 Dr. is really putting the pressure on her to come work for him but I’m fighting it.I’m tired of dealing with grandchildren all the time.
I realize not everyone is cut out for the medical field but I found it interesting and mostly rewarding.

Get some professional headshots for your LinkedIn profile and cover letter, and get professional help writing your resume.

I did this after three weeks of fruitless searching and the change in the number of interviews and contacts from recruiters was remarkable.

Oh, well in that case I can unfortunately relate. My pay and title is great but the rest is the same, particularly the last part. I love my family life but professional life is bringing it down.

For months I have monitored public job postings, most stuff available I am under qualified for, a little too far from home, lateral move that may not be any better, etc. Mainly I would be diving into the unknown just to get out.

FWIW, I have decided to take the route of networking, that is asking people I know if they can help me land something. I’m just a little older than you, I have tons of great experience that is plenty marketable, just owe it to myself and family to find a better fit

A career change is probably in order. I’m great at what I do, but I’ve never actually liked it. The thought of starting over is a big mental block.

Good luck to you
