I hate when the recruiters/hiring manager call you up, as if they are about to offer you and talk about how great you were, only to say they are going with someone else.
Company did this to me twice. Called a third time and I said frick that I’m not applying again. I’m happy at my current job.
A week later they called and said if I apply, the job is mine

This is true. We were told we could hire anyone we wanted as long as their were either female, a non caucasion or both.
Ive gotten 3 phone calls in the last week from hiring managers/recruiters talking me up as if they are about to offer me, only to say they are going with someone else.
Just send me a damn email saying I haven't been selected. Talking me up to let me down wont make me feel any better.
But yes, when I was a hiring manager hiring a team of 3 two years ago, the first two candidates I selected were white(because ALL of the applicants I was given to interview were white), so my higher ups were "encouraging" me to select a "minority" candidate. I did end up selecting a hispanic, but only because she was so much better in the interview than the white girl who also interviewed.

I’ve said many times the hiring process is completely broken. But I don’t see it changing. Most middle management don’t have a particularly impressive grasp on the process.
That said, I always encourage folks to go volunteer, or find some passion project. Something that keeps you on a routine, socializing with quality people and growing some identifiable skills.
Kind of in line with the idea of being single and desperate you need to get back to investing in yourself to build confidence.

Do you have any experience in construction? I own a recruiting business and filling spots for reinforcement iron workers for an apprenticeship that starts at $18/hour. You would get overtime and would possible make in the high 20's within 4-5 years.

This has been obvious. The last interview I had was for a payroll position. Two old ladies interviewed me over Zoom. Don't think they had ever hired anyone in their lives. They asked 2 questions:
1. My resume was really impressive, why did I want this job? - basically making me sell their own job to them
2. If I was such an analytical worker, why did I major in English in college? - Asking about my degree from fricking 10 years ago instead of literally any relevant work experience I had since then
That was it. End of interview questions.
One of them literally described her job as "Well, a lot of times it feels like you have nothing to do...not that we sit around doing nothing." It was my deduction that that is exactly what she does.

Yeah, it sucks. I was an engineering manager at a chemical plant that got closed down. I had the privilege of managing a team of ~ 15 people, determining when they would be laid off, still trying to motivate them to do their jobs. I got laid off in July of last year, but started looking the previous March, interviewing for Sr Engineering individual contributor jobs, process control positions and other Engineering management positions. Couple of interviews, but a lot of no responses. You submit your resume online, and if you’re lucky, you’ll get an email back.
Hell, my previous boss, who was training me to take her job before the shutdown announcement (she was looking to move back to the UK) had gotten an equivalent job at another company which I just happened to apply for and got an interview. I didn’t think that I was a shoe-in but thought I had a good shot at it, and talked with her and she went to bat for me.
Turns out, a friend of the plant manager just happened to be in the same position as me and got the job. They may have been a better candidate, but I felt like it was more of a “who you know” type situation.
Eventually I landed a position after about 6 months, kept basically the same pay, so I consider myself pretty fortunate. Stick with it, you’ll get something, but also consider having a consultant look at your resume if you haven’t already. I thought mine was ironclad, but apparently the trends on what is a “good” resume these days has changed quite a bit in the last 15 years.
And for god sake, don’t put your fricking “pronouns” in your bio. I don’t care what anyone says, your resume will get shitcanned immediately if you so.

Did a lot of writing in college (English major)
I've done quite a bit in my current job of writing up my own onboarding/training materials, a lot of my responsibilities require me to synthesize info from multiple sources and pull them together to draw conclusions and build an action plan.
I feel like I have the skills but not a body of work, so I've only applied for a couple of basic jobs in the field, one of which has remained open for 6-7 months. For that one specifically, I just feel like - could you not just interview me and see if I could do it? Obviously your current search plan isn't working.

I think I was spoiled by getting my jobs in Iowa and Louisville, both of them I went through the entire process from first phone call to signing the offer in less than a week.
When I have interviewed people I know who my candidates are right after I am done. Why waste time?
Too much corporate red tape. One company I am interviewing with right now, I had my first phone screen with them last month, then my second interview 3 weeks ago, and then my 3rd interview last week. I've done a phone screen and 2 interviews in a span of 5 weeks, and according to them I am still only in the "2nd round".
I guess since I am interviewing for higher paygrade and management positions, they need to be more thorough, but still.
One job that rejected me a couple weeks ago, I had a phone screen, 2 hour long Zoom interviews, and then a 2 hour panel interview where I talked to 4 people. Then they tell me the next day I am not being selected because I didn't have a masters degree. First of all, why did you waste my time and yours when you simply could have looked at my resume to find out I didn't have one? Second, why does it matter? It was clear I aced every step of the process along the way. Who gives a shite if I don't have a masters?
