re: Nothing is more depressing than a dragged-out job search

But yes, when I was a hiring manager hiring a team of 3 two years ago, the first two candidates I selected were white(because ALL of the applicants I was given to interview were white), so my higher ups were "encouraging" me to select a "minority" candidate. I did end up selecting a hispanic, but only because she was so much better in the interview than the white girl who also interviewed.
This type of stuff blows my mind. You can't control who does and doesn't apply. Glad it worked out, but putting people in a position to feel pressured to hire a minority solely due to them being a minority is such a sham. Sadly, companies have to still watch their back in case a hit piece is written about them.
Regardless, I'm glad to see all the positive encouragement here. I think many of us have seen dark days of job hunting and understand the grind. Keep chugging, keep your head up, let your personality, work ethic, and other qualities do the talking for you. You will get noticed eventually if you keep pushing.

Hang in there, man. I suggest that you find other things that you are good at and focus on your successes with those. You need to feel some sort of progress and success periodically to to stay positive and motivated. The job thing will come though, but you have to find ways to identify and use your strengths in the meantime.

What’s your email? I’ll send you a lead I saw for a data scientist position.

This thread is both super depressing and awesome at the same time.
A bunch of strangers you don't know are offering their insight AND jobs. That is very cool. To the OT baws helping this Floridian with an English degree out, I salute you
@ OP - have you thought about going back to school and getting an advanced degree while you're job hunting?

Why would someone in data science need a CompTia cert? Post your email and you might get a few resumes

I've considered it off and on.
By biggest hesitancies are (1) having to commit financial resources to something that might not necessarily guarantee me a job, especially a career change (2) do I quit my current job? do I ask my wife to shoulder even more responsibility in our household while I work full time and go to school? (3) I had an awful time going through college the first time, and no matter how strongly I feel like I would be more focused and prepared to maximize education this time, I'm still scared that I would struggle
This thread has been very cathartic for me. It's nice to be reminded that these are struggles everyone faces and not necessarily a reflection of your failures or successes.

hmmm... I work for a construction company in Metairie, we're looking for PM's....

I'm surprised to hear you're struggling to find work at 32-years-old. That's still young, in my mind. I'm in my mid-40s and sometimes try to find another career, to no avail. Ageism is real. I'm convinced HR graduates are being taught no to hire anyone over the age of 30. Good luck, out there!

If you were in middle TN, I'd interview with you today and probably hire you by the end of the interview.

Would you mind if I emailed you a resume just for some feedback?

If anyone for a white collar job ever tells you they don't have times like these, they are lying.

I know exactly how you feel.
Lost a 100k+ cush job and still got lucky to nearly land a better career job 2 weeks after that then covid hit and that company did a hiring freeze.
Took 7 months living off unemployment and a severance package. I connected with every business and person in my industry locally. When I realized that wasn't working I started looking into the cities. With covid and remote the pool for workers in my field was so large now salaries went down and competition was tough. I had no bargaining power. At 43 and even with 18yrs in the industry it didn't matter. I was at the point wondering if I will need to relocate my family and how unfair that was to them. Lows on top of lows.
I got lucky and got a local job at a great company. 45% less pay but just not having that cloud over your head is a great feeling.

I'll help if I can, but be warned that what I look for on resumes and professional HR people look for are probably two different things.

I definitely felt this way the past 3 months. I hopefully start my next job next week.

I wouldn’t mind getting back into pm work. I’m a little rusty (been doing construction defects law and law school the past 5 years), but I think I could get back into the swing of things. Email me at bryndenblackfish@yahoo.com

I was a nose to the grindstone, shut up and do the job guy for basically 10-12 years. I trusted that my bosses saw what I was doing, valued that work, and were advocating on my behalf - I was incredibly naive.
This is the biggest lesson that I literally just learned.
