Networking is for brown nosers who want to be yes men for managers who do frick all for their company. I hate networking. I can do the job, either hire me or tell me to keep it moving. If you have a better candidate, great, hire them, that’s what I’d do.

And don’t ask me to tell you my weakness/strength because I’m going to give you the exact same answer for both and it’s a bullshite answer for a bullshite question. Also “where do I see myself in 5 years?” fricking your wife that’s where. Stupid arse question. And don’t ask me anything about social/political nonsense in the interview. I’m not running for office nor am I applying for a job with a politician or political consulting firm so it’s irrelevant.

Either I can do the job effectively or not. For me, I hate wasting my time so if I’m applying for a job, it’s because I know I can do it and probably better than the nutsacks you had/have doing it currently. If anything, I’m underselling myself.

Anyways, women suck in HR and if you can get them talking about anything other than the job that creates positive feelings, then you’re golden. People don’t always remember what you said, but they’ll remember how you made them feel and women love feeling some shite.

Apologies. You normally take a more progressive view on things and the OP wasn’t exactly being blatant in your disdain.

Sorry you’re going through this. Sometimes my job pisses me off but you’ve given a cautionary tale on the market today.

Do you have any technical writing skills in technology? I know a contract programmer for the VA. I have a friend who was looking last month. No idea what’s up now or if he’s hired.

Have you thought about learning a trade?

You can make some serious cash as a plumber or electrician.

There's a website called jobscan.co

Use it to craft your resume to the job description from the hiring company. Basically you paste your resume in one box and the description in another. The site scans both and offers keyword changes that automated resume systems will look for... then adjust your resume accordingly.

Per the software most people only match like 20%. Using the software you can match 80% or more.

The human eyes often aren't the gate keepers... usually it's the automated review software.

Best of luck! I was in your shoes for 3 months in 2018, but landed an amazing position. Being laid off really was the best thing for me.

Yep, I was laid off in the fall of 2019. I drove a tractor, worked at Walmart, took odd jobs here and there before finally finding something in my field.

I know exactly how you feel in regards to "failing your wife and kids."

Keep your head up and keep looking. Something positive will happen for you.

I had 4 interviews today, I have 2 tomorrow, and have set up a few for next week already.

I am having no problem drawing attention, 2 recruiters reached out to me today for jobs I didn't even apply for, so I am getting the bites, I just need to finish the deal on one of these.

Whoever said I have character issues... that was a low blow. You gave zero examples of such character issues. How can you judge a message board persona on how a person actually is in real life?

Data Science? What skills? I am curious . What applications are you good at? What certs ( Sec+, Server+...PMP) Are you familiar with what's going on with Machine Learning. Any clearances?

I have actually started to steer my search away from data science jobs. I would say my experience I have is more toward the public opinion/market research/media analytics space. I have a ton of experience in R, Python, Machine Learning, Modeling, Statistics, Data Warehousing, Data Engineering, but I've found most data science jobs are looking more for people with software engineering/IT experience, i.e. people who can program in C++, JavaScript and other more advanced languages. Also too many of them require masters degrees, which I don't have.

Also many of these roles can't get past the fact my job title has never been "data scientist" in the past, even though data science work is exactly what I have done. I led the entire analytics department for a major broadcast company supporting data analytics operations for 67 different TV stations and managed a team of 8 analysts, you're not going to be able to get that role and succeed in it without some serious coding, programming, data pipe lining, automation and scaling skills.

I've refocused my search more toward analytics and insights roles, roles that still require heavy data analysis and strong coding/data skills, but without the snobbery or stupidly high bar that I would have to clear to get past the interviews.

My last data science interview was with 2 smug snobby arrogant know it all types who purposely structured their questions to get those interviewing to slip up. I was able to navigate their minefield but one question I mess up on, NOT because I didn't have the answer, but because it was a fricking zoom interview and I couldn't understand what the hell the guy was saying because his mic sucked. I had to ask for clarification 3 times, and finally after the 3rd time I understood and proceeded to answer the question, but after that they cut the interview off saying I didn't have the skills necessary to proceed further in the interview. frick them. Funny because that was 3 weeks ago and they are still promoting their job posting on LinkedIn. Good luck trying to find your perfect candidate.

Best post in this thread...networking is overrated unless you are in a sales position.

During my last job search 3 years ago, I was in a much different space, had run out of money and was working as a bartender to get by, and was living at home, my parents(just trying to help) had me go to this group at a church that met every Thursday Morning in Southlake, TX, it was a meeting where people who were looking for work came to meet others in the same situation for support and to network.

I went 4 times and got absolutely nothing out of it. Yeah, you exchange a lot of business cards and phone numbers and linked in accounts with the other people there, but I got zero leads out of it. And hundreds of people showed up to this thing.

You bunch of pissants don’t even understand what networking is. You think it’s exchanging business cards and swapping skills?

Networking is RELATIONSHIP BUILDING. Success in your career 99% of the time will only be as great as the relationships you build.

God, this thread is a cross section of the workforce. There’s clear leaders. Clear line staff. And the unemployed lamenting why they’re unemployed with no self awareness whatsoever.

You know how I spot a 65K a year rig supervisor? Answers like this. There is no upward mobility with this attitude whatsoever.
