A sad story no doubt, but is that kid throwing up a gang sign?

If the cops did that to me, I'd bond out, find the house of that stupid old heifer that ran over my kid, and burn it down.

My working hypothesis is that they're known to police as being involved with various types of vice, but that none were directly implicated in this incident.

Cool...but when do we start arresting parents when their kid shoots somebody?

How is it the old lady's fault that the kid stepped in front of her vehicle?

I've been wondering when to start letting my 8 year old daughter do this. We have no sidewalks and she'd always have to be in the street, but seems like it should be soon where we let her have more independence.

I grew up in a neighborhood with sidewalks and we were always outside and all over the neighborhood but can't really remember if I was more 9-10 when having that free rein or 7-8.

Are you aware that bicycles belong on the street and not on the sidewalk?

He walked to the store with his 10 yo brother.

Back in the 80s, My dad used to send me across a busy highway to get gas for the weed eater when I was under ten. I never thought twice about it until was older and realized how stupid it was. I’m still alive though.

And I'm talking about an 8 year old kid in a residential neighborhood.

Maybe I'm crazy, but I'm not really expecting kids to fully abide by the laws of the road.

A 10 year old walking with his 7 year old to the store sounds completely normal to me.

We’ve lost the fricking plot. Cops and DA are absolute POS for charging them; savage animals if they didn’t allow them to go to the funeral.

Agreed. This is an accident and it sucks. Kids had probably made that walk before. Unfortunately, it will happen again. I think we should be very cautious before handing the police/government decisional controls over children.

West Hudson is a busy major 4 lane road, not a quiet neighborhood street.

Our middle schoolers are required to cross that kind of road to get to school.

Was just thinking the same thing. Kids are required to walk near/cross roads like that to walk to the bus stop.

My kids, 8 & 11, regularly rife their bikes across town alone to go to the pool, library, local Casey's for slushies, Dairy Queen, you name it. It's summer, they're all over town, and so are their friends.

The preliminary investigation revealed that the child was attempting to cross the street outside of a crosswalk with another 10-year-old boy, when he entered the roadway and was hit.

“While the Gastonia Police Department offers its deepest sympathies to the family for the heartbreaking loss of their child, the investigation revealed that the children involved were unsupervised at the time the boy stepped into traffic. In such cases, adults must be held accountable for their responsibilities to ensure a safe environment for their children.”

If this is the full story the cops are way, way overstepping their authority.

There has to be more to this.

A lot of folks saying this but all it takes is a couple overzealous folks

Recall that story a couple months ago that a parent was arrested for letting a kid walk to the corner store in a rural area - nothing else happened beyond the kid being like 10 or 12 or such
