One thing is certain,

It's amazing how the surrounding parishes seem to thrive with lower taxes and more government services.
Suburban parishes/counties are the most subsidized areas in the United States.
In fact, I spoke with a city planner who was doing studies in Louisiana, and he found that the Northshore is the single most expensive area of the state to service. NS residents pay a tiny fraction of what it costs to provide basic services. It was eye opening. Basically the Covington conservatives are the biggest moochers in the state, and they don't even know it.

Not maintaining what they have, then finally having an excuse for fed money when they never did their job to begin with. Sounds about right for the "poor me" attitude of the city.
The city sickens me.

This FEMA trail of cash has caused other issues also. Take for instance permits to build anything and I mean anything in the state of Louisiana. I am building a structural steel building for barn use in Louisiana and the permitting to do such is insane. And why? Well when the state took that FEMA money for Katrina and Rita they made a deal with the devil. Now every structure has to be built to government codes which means an army of people with their hands out for cash in return for a permit. Sure you can build a camp out of scrap lumber and rusted tin but try living in it full time. Before that camp permit is given you sign an affidavit at the court house that you will never use the structure as a perminent living arrangement. Try using your own lumber that you had cut from timber on your property. Will work for a "camp" (see previous sentence) but not for your permanent residence. Must be graded and stamped lumber like that at Home Depot. Get this...for the metal barn I am building this particular parish requires the drawing to have a state of Louisiana engineering stamp. You don't have that you don't get the building permitted. And you guessed that cost extra. A lot extra. All of this only scratches the surface.
I am sure they are under the table ways to avoid all of this. By they way here in Texas....in rural areas...zero permitting. Build what you damn well please. I grew up in Louisiana and it is hard to watch what politicians have done to my home home state.

I would rather see federal money stay in the US than them send it to every foreign place that has a catastrophe.

Exactly. You couldn't score a 3BR in Lakeview for what that costs.
Point made.

This doesn't surprise as the money to maintain the city's infrastructure over the years has lined politician's pockets. But on the other hand I would rather that money stay in the country than the billions and billions we send each year to Middle East.

You want elaborate on this? Like what sorts of basic services?

I ran crews in sept/oct/nov 05 digging out catch basins and jetting out storm sewer lines
most of the catch basins were full of tree roots and compacted full of decades of dirt so bad we had to hack at them with breaking bars just to loosen it up for the vacuum trucks
Nola got a free storm sewer douche courtesy of your tax dollars

the most expensive house for sale in lakeview right now is 1.19m, 5 beds 6 bath, 4,475 sq feet. Where are you getting this stuff? Meanwhile in Covington

Oh, wait. Do you want to play most expensive houses in Nola vs Covington?
Lolz.
Step away from the keyboard. Maybe you can hit up Chili's or Olive Garden. ULL fans may provide you with some good coping mechanisms for runts.

youre comprehension skills seem to be lacking (must be that nola education) so let me break it down for you. you said you could not buy a 3 br house in lakeview for what one of those mansions costs. however, with a little research, its obvious you can buy much more in lakeview for much less. so YOUR point is invalid.
nola is a city, the northshore is not. of course any city will have higher priced property than a surburban area. and for your chain resturarant comments? if you think all there is in covington is the crap you see on 190 than you are truly ignorant. and its not like you have room to talk:

Haha so much anger Sid. It will be ok.
I was wondering how long it would take for Sid to respond. So easy.
Thanks Sid this thread was for you!

This shite is stupid.... even my friends that have moved to the NS comment that they wish they could have swung it in the city and come down here almost every Sat and Sun to do cool shite.
The 190 corridor would be closer to 90 backwoods rednecks instead of the 50% it is now if it wasn't siphoning off money from the city.
Back to the topic. There is no way to tell how much was fricked before the storm and after, but when you have a place as densely packed as Nola with people living in the small area for 300+ years, you are bound to have areas neglected. But I think the Feds stepping up and helping put a great American back on its feet is just fair. I'd be saying the same if it were Baltimore or philly or NY or Providence.

I like the comment that NOLA was only spending $2 million a year on road maintenance when they should have been spending $30+ million. Makes sense the roads are terrible.
