A lot of the old streets in Nola didn't have curbs so they would put those shells between the asphalt and the sidewalk. My grandmother's house had that.

The State halted dredging for the clam shells in 1990.
They are (like all sea shells) made mostly out of Calcium Carbonate, like Tums, and they don’t quickly break down.

I can recall seeing roads or streets with crushed up clam shells mixed with asphalt instead of rocks for paving streets.
The dredging stopped because dredging them stirred up the water in the lake. Sediments that sank in the lake bed would get suspended again the water. Some of those sediments over the years included heavy metals and other pollutants from the rivers on the north shore that emptied into the lake and the times the Bonne Carre spillway was opened.
My dad used to run boats that towed barges out there for the shells. He opined to me that if they stopped dredging the lake one day you will be able to walk across it. He also said that they never ran out of shells.
I wonder if the technology were there to dredge again but instead of just blowing the dirty lake bed suction water overboard you process and filter out all the heavy metals and pollutants before reintroducing the suction water back into the lake.

When I was a kid, the road to my house was white clam shells. Made a huge dust cloud in the summer. Occasionally they would throw down some oyster shells. That messed with my mind as I thought clams were much higher quality material.

I grew up in Vermilion parish and we had a clam shell drive way for a bit when I was really young (30+ years ago).
