After months of financial turmoil, Southern University of New Orleans officials have decided to suspend all athletic programs as a cost-saving measure, according to a memo circulated on Tuesday.

All intercollegiate athletic programs will come to a pause after the last event of the 2019-2020 school year, SUNO Interim Chancellor Dr. James H. Ammons said in the memo, and the suspension will continue for "an unspecified period" of time.

The suspension will affect 56 student athletes, four head coaches and one assistant coach, he said. SUNO's website says the school offers basketball and track and field teams for both men and women, as well as a women's volleyball program.

Ammons said then that it might be necessary to eliminate the entire athletics program altogether, and to further cut administration, faculty and staff positions, in order to "right the ship" enough to keep accreditation.

"The news comes just days after the city's only historically black public university was placed on its second consecutive year of probation by its accrediting agency because of financial struggles, and about four months after the institution announced it would furlough some employees and increase teaching loads to save money."

"The school has also been hurt by rising entry requirements mandated by the state, which have made it harder for SUNO's traditional student population to be admitted."

"Enrollment has dwindled, falling to 2,308 students in the current semester, down 15% from five years ago, when 2,724 students signed up."

"If SUNO can't balance its books, it faces a possible loss of accreditation. Ammons said the school has until mid-March to prove its financial stability."

In an interview Wednesday, Appel said that a merger would have helped to prevent SUNO's current crisis. But he said a merger is unlikely at this point. "From a purely practical perspective, it might just be easier to let it fold," Appel said. "I’m not sure there’s any value in trying to save an institution that’s been in trouble for decades."

historically black public university

It won’t be a popular opinion I’m sure, but this shite needs to end. If we had a “historically white public university” the outrage would be never ending.

They just built a really nice building for the school of social work. That will make things right.

Yeah, no. That ship sailed under Jindal.

They can either beg SUBR to save them or go bust.

I remember when they vehemently protested merging with UNO down the street as Governor Jindal proposed. They claimed they were better off on their own.

14% graduation rate, 12% acceptance rate.

Compared to SU in BR: 41% graduation rate, 99% acceptance rate.

Should have merged with UNO during Jindal administration, but nope. Some parties didn’t want that.

I bet you could take the graduation timeframe out to 10 years after first enrollment and not break 30% for SUNO.

“12% acceptance rate” cannot be right, that would be lower than most top 25 universities.

Let us not forget Southern has the lowest graduation rate of all universities in the entire country. The WSJ profiled the school in recent years because it has one of the highest student loan default rates and the lowest graduation rate of any university. I would wager their graduation rate is single digits, not sure where you get “14%”, that article had it between 5-6%.

They get under qualified students to enroll, backed by government funded student loans, and the school doesn’t care if they graduate once the school receives the loan funds.
