husband and I wanted to do something for the NICU staff to thank them for all they did for our son. There are so many employees, though. Not really sure of what to do. For those that graduated, do you have any suggestions?

During the time were in the NICU, I took a dozen doughnuts a few times... stuff like that. We had a couple of nurses that we grew close to and invited them to some special occasions for a year or two.

It is a weird dynamic. They are doing their jobs and no value can be put on the gift they give you. Keep them involved... you'll know when it's time.

Prayers sent.

Double check about the gift cards. Many hospitals will not let their nursing staff accept gift cards from patients/families.

ETA: My hospital you can face disciplainary actions if you accept a gift card from a patient. It’s looked in the same light as accepting cash from a patient. However....we can always accept small gifts (less than $25 in value) and food. Maybe get food for everyone and a small special gift for your primary nurses(I’m assuming your son was assigned a primary).

My parents probably spent 10 grand on the wonderful nurses who took care of my brother when he was born 10 weeks early. Best money ever spent imo

Roughly 5 days, due to blood sugar and feeding issues.

My wife had been in labor with him for 8 hours before having a section, so he burned up all his energy, and he had feeding issues due to what was later determined to be a frenulum that was too long.

His blood sugar issues corrected themselves but he had to be bottle fed. His frenulum got clipped at 6 months when he had a raft of issues taken care of such as getting tubes.

Is it a public hospital? Sounds like a bit much.

Yeah it’s a public hospital. Not saying I agree with the policy. Just saying that I’ve had to very nicely turn down gift cards from families because it would get me in trouble with the compliance department of our hospital. I appreciated the gesture from the parents and all....but I also want to keep my job.

ETA: We do mandatory online training every year on compliance stuff at work. Not being able to accept money/gift cards is gone over numerous times in the training.

I had a brief rotation at a NICU for a week or so and I don't know how the nurses do it... and also... you all as parents...bless you for going through that.. my goodness that felt like a hopeless place. I was so glad to be out of there.

It seemed like as much good news of babies getting stronger and healthier... you could see the pain on the parents faces whose children were not improving... Broke my heart.

I think most hospitals have that policy. But if someone gets you a card and you don’t open it until you get home, then it’s kind of pointless to try and give it back.

I never got shite. When I was an insurance auditor, I did do an audit at someone’s camp and they gave me 2 dozen free range eggs? But that’s about it. I enjoyed filling out the paperwork for the gift I received on that one.

I work in a doctor's office. We have the same policy. But patients bring thin s all the time. Especially at Christmas. Usually just food though. We have to do the same training nurse was speaking of. In fact, we may work for the same parent company.

My bil brought donuts and such daily while the baby was in the NICU and after. Now, they donate to Children’s Miracle Network and show up for all of those events. It’s appreciated.

My twins were borne at 34 weeks. One stayed for 1 week, the other 2. Seeing some of the other young babies in there really made me realize that we were lucky. It can be a very joyous and somber place, depending.

Prayers to all the little ones in NICU.

My 4 month old was in the NICU for 3 days before being released to our care. She was actually born two days after her due date and had a little extra fluid in her lungs. She came out completely silent. Scary few minutes while they worked on her. She’s very happy and healthy now.

I remember in that first 2 hours after birth being so sick with worry. I’m saying a prayer right now for all the people and newborns going through so much harder times than we did.

To wrap it up. I’d just like to send resounding adoration for the people of Women’s Hospital NICU in Baton Rouge. They were completely on top of everything and extremely comforting.

Spent 6 weeks in NICU.

Mrs. Sheep Jr. was born eight weeks early, and a tad under 3 pounds.

We had some bradycardia episodes early on, and we had to get her weight up early on - but mostly smooth sailing. A lot of long days and nights, though.

That was more than three years ago - she's a full blooded, healthy, normal sized, insane terrorist now.
