How long did your babies stay and when were they born? What issues did your babe have that kept them longer?

My wife had to have an emergency c section due to my son's cord being in a knot. He was born at 34 weeks and stayed in the NICU for almost a month. They kept him there due to the fact he wasn't able to latch on to a nipple (bottle or wife) on his own. Also, he wasn't strong enough or big enough to sit in his car seat.

Daughter born at 32 weeks...3 lbs 1 ounce. No major health issues. In NICU for 3 weeks until we were kicked out due to a RSV breakout in the unit. Sent us home with all kinds of electronics and wires attached to monitor her. That was the scariest part.

She’s now 7 and has no issues. Always felt we were really lucky.

Our son passed the car seat test. We got stopped today because he had a bradycardia in his last feed yesterday. Now we are 5 days out at least. He was born two days past 34 weeks. Will be 37 weeks Monday.

My oldest was born at 30 weeks and stayed in the NICU for 6 weeks. She had a CPAP and feeding tube for a few weeks, then the last week or so was just making sure she would remember to breathe.

She’s 3 years old now and thankfully has no issues or complications from being born so early.

My guy just came home 2 weeks ago on Sunday. He spent 30 days. He at first couldn't keep his blood sugar up. That took 2 weeks to resolve. His platelets dropped once, and he had to have a transfusion. Then he was breathing too fast. That made getting off of the feeding tube hard because he couldn't try feeding until/unless his breathing was slow enough. He still can't really nurse. His heart is little too large, so we have to follow up with cardiology. And endocrinology for the blood sugar issues. They decided they were probably off on his due date and he is actually 2 weeks younger than they thought. So about 8 weeks early. It's been tough, but I am so glad he's home and doing well. Scary shite.

We had 4 babies. All but one did not really need to be in the NICU. The healthiest stayed the longest. It really seemed that they would invent reasons to keep them longer. What I really hated was that one doctor would set a milestone to achieve to go home and then when the next doctor would come on shift, that would go out the window. The last two babies were twins. One went home and the other, I, quite literally, staged a sit-in. Told the doctor I was not leaving again until they let me take my daughter home with me. They released her that day.

Glad to hear your little guy doing well. The NICU is a stressful place.

I read an article a couple of weeks ago that said being a NICU parent for longer than X amount of days can cause PTSD. I swear I believe it. The fear is real. Nights were the hardest for me. But it was equally as scary as it was happy to bring him home. Prayers your little guy comes home soon.

This is almost identical to our situation. Born 34 weeks. In the NICU for 14 days. Had a couple bradycardia episodes that kept pushing his stay longer. He’s now 19 months old and doing great. Those first few nights home were scary though especially after having gone through some bradycardia.

If nothing else, a device like an owlet is great to ease the mind early on.
