Two weeks for low birth weight (twins), one was 4 12 the other one 4 08. The "skinny" twin is a Green Beret now.

You learn to look straight ahead going through NICU, I saw some things I wont ever forget.

We had my first daughter at 25 weeks @ 1lb 9 ounces and she was in there for 3.5 months with multiple issues from needing heart surgery at 5 days old to having a grade 3 brain bleed. Left the hospital and came home for 4 weeks before going back in where she had to have a tracheaostomy. They told us she would most likely (80% Chance) she would have cerebral palsy from the brain bleed...fast forward today where she turns 10 next month and is pretty much a normal kid aside from having ADHD. Miracles do happen and keep praying bc it works.

1 week. He was wrapped in the umbilical cord during delivery and swallowed fluid, nearly choked death. He had an IV in his head for feeding and on breathing tubes. It was scary and sad but we fought thru it. The Doctors and nurses were outstanding.

Kantz-if you read this we still think of you and Molly a lot. The song lollipop brings tears to my eyes. I hope you and your family are well. There will always be a family on the west coast that thinks of you and yours. Love to you all.

Thank you. Honestly reading all the posts and seeing things while being up there we are probably a better case scenario than a lot of people. It still just is awful not getting to take your baby home. I do really enjoy reading all the success stories posted. Gives us something to look forward too.

Kudos to womans in baton rouge. Unbelievable nurses there.

I second that. And god bless all NICU nurses and families. Worst feeling in the world.

We spent 30 days there for my oldest who came out with no heart rate and no breath. They kept looking for problems and reasons to keep him but he beat all odds and is healthy as an ox.

My wife's OB noticed a problem at the 20 week mark and immediately sent us up to see a specialist in Cincinnati that dealt with twin to twin transfusion syndrome. I have never been so scared in my life. That 8 hour drive is still all a blur to me. After looking at the options the doctors up at Cincinnati Children's felt that surgery was not the best option at that time for fear of losing one or both twins. We made a return trip up to Cincinnati at the 26 week mark at my Wife's doctors request and surgery was again ruled out. We returned home and played the waiting game. The doctors in Cincinnati had a goal of making it to 27 weeks and the doctors at home wanted to make it to 28 weeks. Pretty much on cue her water broke at 28 weeks even and we were able to make it into the next morning to get to 28 weeks and 1 day. The twins weighed in at 2 pounds 9 ounces and 2 pounds 1 ounce. Twin 1 got to leave the NICU after 67 days while twin 2 was able to leave after 99 days. It was a roller coaster ride for sure and what made it worse was that my wife used to work in the NICU before becoming a nurse practitioner. We were blessed because she was pretty much allowed to pick our nurses, but she knew too much and that added so much more stress to the already stressful situation. We ended up dealing with a grade 1 and 2 brain bleed or PVL, numerous Chest tubes and utilizing 3 different ventilators, Nec from a perforated bowel, and all sorts of smaller problems. One of the happiest days of my life was when they removed the breathing tube from twin 2. Twin 2 ended up having to come home on oxygen but was able to get weened off within a couple of months. The twins are about to turn 18 months old and are doing great. No major problems or deficits and we feel extremely blessed. All I can say is that God is Great!!!

Thanks Isabelle. Luckily for my son he never had to go on the ecmo machine. Again, the nicu nurses are true heroes in my book. They not only took amazing care of my son they went out of their way to help us. Will never forget what they did for us.

The nurses at Woman's have been nothing short of amazing. The doctors as well, but I interact daily with the nurses and they all care so much. I'm kind of thinking my son wants to stay there because all the cute nurses keep telling him how handsome he is.

Drunkenpukin, you mentioned he still can’t really nurse. Is he feeding well otherwise?

He is for the most part. I pump and supplement with Neosure because it's hard to keep my supply up with him not nursing. I think he has some reflux, so calling the Dr on Monday. He chokes and clears his throat a lot. And he's fussy after eating.

Could be. That's a cute outlook.

I remember my niece wasn't all that anxious for her baby to come home too soon. Working full time and going back and forth to the hospital early morning and nights and in between when she could with a toddler at home wasn't easy. However, the baby was safe and in good hands and every ounce gained was a win. He was still so tiny to us when he finally came home. I think just over 4 pounds, but he had no issues at all which was a blessing.

One week. He didn't make it out alive. 16 years ago. He was born at 23 weeks gestation. Didn't have a good chance to begin with, 5%. He caught a candidas infection and that really doomed him. He's our hero. If it wasn't for his courage his 3 siblings would not have lived. My wife had an incompetent cervix.

Sorry to hear about your lost rant. I am sure that the following three you had were loved that much more from going through that. My greatest gifts I have gotten in life are my 3 kids.
