I was just sharing my rule of thumb. Nothing to do with this particular incident.

Total anecdote not completely related to this thread:
A co-worker of mine just got back from New Orleans with her nieces. She said they had a good time, but the last night one of her nieces had her wallet pickpocketed right out of her purse.
I kind of just rolled my eyes and said, "yeah that's about right."

There should be billboards on every entry to New Orleans warning tourist about the crime rate.
Actually, the embassies of a lot of foreign countries warn their citizens to not visit New Orleans due to high violent crime.

If you still are going to the Quarter knowing all the crime problems that are occuring there, and something happens to you, I won't have sympathy for you.

Time to issue hunting tags to some good ole boys.... no limits either. Throw the carcasses in to the lake and it will help the size and quality of the catfish and crabs... win win.

Tough. It was on a street parallel to St. Charles and five streets riverward, upstream from Audubon Park.
How many property owners do you know in Orleans parish? Too many of us have had these sorts of stories.
The wierdest purse snatching happened on Gov. Nicholls St. We let a Jefferson Parish friend use our townhouse in the Quarter for Mardi Gras. He looked out and saw a purse being tossed into a pickup truck parked in front of our place. He retrieved the purse and recongnized the name of the woman who owned it. He had an exwife from MIchigan, and it was his Mother in Law's. He returned it to her.
No, he didn't do it, he wasn't the color of the purse snatcher.

Yeah, to say there is no nice part of NOLA is a dumb statement.
Saying there are no nice parts of NOLA that aren't adjacent or very close to a bad area is closer to accurate.

Is crime a problem in New Orleans? Yes, of course, but it is nothing new. In fact, it is much better now than it was 20 years ago, and it didn't stop tourism then. You were nearly 3 times more likely to be a victim of a violent crime in 1990 than you are today, and twice as likely to be a vitcim of a property crime in 1990.
The idea that crime is all of a sudden going to harm tourism in New Orleans is illogical. Hell, Chicago was the #2 destination in the country for conventions last year.
New Orleans was #10, up from #12 in 2015, FWIW.

Are tourists in Chicago being robbed and assaulted left and right? It seems like their crime is more contained.

BS. Hang the carcasses with a noose all around the outskirts of the Quarter on the sign poles. Tie a sign on their chest that says "I tried to loot but all I got was execute". It will get their attention real quick and make them think twice about that shite.

In its Destination Experience Satisfaction Study, released late last year, J.D. Power rated Memphis 29th out of the top 50 U.S. cities for tourism. While that may not sound so bad, the group also rated Memphis just 12th out of 15 cities in the South, many of which are in direct competition with the Bluff City for tourism dollars.
According to the survey, 13 percent of visitors left disappointed and another 25 percent left indifferent. Those with concerns particularly cited safety, difficulties with public transportation and the ability to get to and from the city with ease.
While Kane questions the methodology of such a survey, he also acknowledged the noted concerns, particularly crime.
“It’s a great concern,” he said. “The issue of public safety is very concerning to us. We live it every day in Memphis. It is a problem that we have to deal with, probably more so than some other cities.”
However, Kane said that the perception of crime in Memphis isn’t as bad as it is in Chicago and New Orleans, two cities Memphis often competes with in terms of tourist dollars.
“At the top of that heap, Chicago and New Orleans. When it comes to negative perceptions, they’re off the charts. And both of those are great tourism destinations,” Kane said. “We are probably not perceived as safe as Nashville, but we are not perceived like New Orleans and Chicago.”

It has been for some time (at least as far back as 2000). Not sure why that is news.
