A lot of it is gangs.

Drug Cartels are using the Black gangs against each other to peddle their shite. They sit back, and play them for fools, while the gangs kill each other for the right to push the drug lords shite. Hispanic gangs went from having to kill to stay alive, to now being the local leaders for the drug cartels.

Are tourists in New Orleans having it happen to them left and right? The answer is no.

ETA: Downvotes from people with absolutely nothing to back up their disagreement with.

Depends on how you define 'you'.

I'd be willing to bet that these crimes were far more heavily concentrated in certain parts of town.

The 'it was worse in the 90's' crowd are missing the point. This shite is becoming more prevalent in the tourist areas and 'nice' areas than it was before.

No one is saying that there was never any crime in the quarter before. But you're blind if you can't see an uptick in random violence against tourists and innocent people going about their business. This is a problem whether you want to believe it or not.

You've had some bad luck with purses. When we goto the quarter I carry my fiancée ID and credit card in my wallet that sits in my front pocket.

I think most people would agree with that. And it all starts with the frickhead Mayor that has overseen this decline. You used to be able to defend some of it, but that a-hole has made sure to ruin it. Hopefully the next one actually cares about the crime.

Not sure. The crime rate in New Orleans is mostly higher across the board, and I'm not arguing otherwise. My point is that the national opinion of Chicago is pretty harsh, yet it was still #2 in convention booking in 2016.

There is no data that confirms or denies that opinion. It is all anecdotal, unfortunately.

I'm not arguing New Orleans is a safe city - it isn't.

Chicago is so fricking big you don't see the crap. There are areas in the south side that cops won't even patrol

No, it's empirical, not anecdotal.

No, it isn't.

People think mass murders are more rampant now across the country, but they aren't. People also think crime is up across the country, but it isn't.

The prevalence of video and the 24-hour news networks are usually to blame.

I don't mean to defend New Orleans, just the faulty logic that it is somehow worse now.

Get AeroSpaceTiger to build one of his rockets with a remote detonator. Make sure both ends are capped and when the perps run away with the purse give them a surprise.

That just looks like a black man walking down the street minding his own business. Definitely doesn't look like he's up to no good.

You joke, but that's another major issue that affects race relations in this country.

It's normal to be wary of shady looking people, regardless of race. Instinct is to avoid trouble, take another route, etc. Some people just seem to scream 'I'm up to no good', and get avoided.

Good black people end up being judged from afar, fairly or not, because a big chunk of violent crimes on random white people are committed by blacks, especially in the South. So people end up segregating themselves for fear of a relatively normal looking young black kid attacking them for no reason. A lot of the thugs who got caught on video or captured for these recent attacks look like just about every other young black man on the street. So the natural reaction is to keep them all out of arms reach and avoid them if possible.

It's not fair to the people who are not threatening anyone and tending to their own business, but incidents like the ones we've seem just deepen stereotypes and divide blacks and whites even further. The result? 'frick those racist arse white folk.' and 'Stay away from the black folks when you get to the convention, Uncle Dave. Black kids have been beating and mugging white people all over town lately.' The cycle just continues.

When I was at Hibernia getting my numbers changed after the purse snatch, the woman in front of me (who happened to be black) was shaky and obviously upset. So we talked about why we were there. She had encountered two black girls, high school by the looks of them, and offered them a ride. When they got in her car, they forced her to drive to her home and robbed her of anything they thought they could pawn. She kept saying she never expected that to happen. I muttered some platitudes and tried to tell her she was good and good things would happen. I won't forget how devastated she was with disappointment in her own race.
