forget who it was, but one band admitted they never wore flannel until Nirvana hit big and all of a sudden, they were told to make their image more “Seattle.”
I hear you but that's really not comparable to the OP comparing it to boy bands.

All you guys should watch “CBGB” with Alan Rickman as Hilly Krystal… origin story for a lot of “punk” bands/performers.

Really well produced and edited as well.

You’re welcome.

The Melvins was the OG “grunge” band and a million percent authentic.

FTFY.

And everyone wore flannel because anyone who’s ever been to Grays Harbor county knows that everyone has loggers in their families. It’s cold, wet, and shitty nine months out of the year. My wife’s town is/was full of loggers.

The music industry is built on copycatting. Someone does something successful then everyone else tries to imitate it.

Were the first wave of grunge bands manufactured by the industry? No, they may have been “produced” a bit to be more commercial but they already existed and had their own style before they hit it big.

Subsequent bands? Yeah, those were likely manufactured to keeping riding the wave. Especially after Cobain died and Pearl Jam started warring with Ticketmaster and doing “new sound” albums like Vitology rather than trying to do the next Ten or Vs.

Nirvana’s sound before, during, and after Nevermind was generally the same. Biggest single difference is that the mixing of Nevermind was done in a way to sound more professional rather than the garage band sound they were going for. And Cobain really didn’t like it but let the studio do it IIRC.

Want to hear the difference? Play the album version off Nevermind then play the live version on From The Banks Of The Wishkah.

Yep, I'm not trashing Nirvana, even though Nevermind's production is slick. They were intentionally going for the most slick version of their music. And then Andy Wallace took the slickness into overdrive with how he mixed it.

They definitely play "Smell Like Teen Spirit" differently on the album than how they play it live. It's a slower tempo (like 20 BPM slower) than the live version of the song.

Regardless of anything else said in this thread, the fact that Alice in Chains started out as a glam, hair metal band is not in dispute.

Jerry is AIC bro.

Uh, Prince signed a record deal at 17 that allowed him to write, produce, and play all of the instruments on all of his albums...and he was coming out on stage in a speedo and a trench coat at the time.

If you have enough talent, you get the deal that you deserve.

And that was considered an absolutely rarity even back then. Saying that, he had zero control over what songs were released and when they could be released, he also didn't legally own any of that music. Thats the reason he changed his name to a symbol, he thought that would be a way around his contractual obligations, which failed miserably. There are stories everywhere from huge artists about how controlled they are by their labels. Signing bonuses are literally a loan, and most artists only make money by touring tirelessly to pay them off. I signed one in 2008, be it a small label, the language is more or less an industry standard. Some get better deals than others, but all basically get fricked in the end.

Jimmy Page was into the occult. That is no big secret. Page was fascinated by Aleister Crowley and dabbled in black magick and demonology and actively participated in rituals. There is the curse on Led Zeppelin. John Bonham and the death of Robert Plant's son are part of the curse.

Why? Because if you consider grunge the fusion of punk and rock being closely followed by the same or similar crowd during the relevant time frame in which grunge was formed, well then that time frame of RHCP's career certainly fits this bill. If YOU have a different definition of "grunge" then I guess I'd say you should ignore my post and move along to something else.

I wouldn't really call this a conspiracy theory. I think Puddle of Mudd was put together. Im sure some of the 80s rock bands were as well. For some reason I want to say Winger might have been.. Don't ask me how I know, but for some reason I think I heard that before. It might not be true.

When it comes to boy bands was Boyz II Men put together?
