It may have been the last really commercially successful rock, but why do you think that means it “killed” it?

Strongly recommend Everybody Loves Our Town: An Oral History of Grunge to everyone in this thread.

Man. Somebody's been waiting a long time for this thread to come around. It's ok buddy. Let it out. Let it out.

Let's just say the silver lining after the Cubs dealt Rizzo and Bryant is that I don't have to see that commercial with Eddie Vedder singing that stupid fricking song 18 times during a game on mlb.com.

Why am I not a fan of Eddie you may ask? Let's see, you haven't heard anything about Eddie being a Cubs fan since the mid 90s and maybe it was mentioned on MTV once or twice. I'm willing to bet people don't realize he's actually from Chicago.

However he and the rest of Pearl Jam repeat the same banal left wing talking points but you'd expect that from Pearl Jam. You only hear more about their political stances now because everything has to be political and now we have social media to showcase it. The complete oppisite of what the vast majority of the Ricketts family supports and it's not like it's a secret either. The Cubs chairman, Tom Ricketts has a brother who is the governor of Nebraska as a Republican. That would be Pete Ricketts.

But like any rich fair weather fan would do, he mooched his way with the Ricketts family so he could be at Wrigley and be a face for the franchise when they were good. Oh they donate to causes that are the antithesis to what we preach to our fans....uh..yeah... ignore that.

Now that the Cubs suck again, you don't hear much anymore.

Not important.

Most bands start off as cover bands or dance bands to gain popularity.

Commercial rock lasted past grunge and into the late 90’s as nu metal (Woodstock ‘99 was heavily attended and post-grunge).

The internet and auto tune killed rock. Market value was placed solely on songs and not on albums.

With auto tune, producers can really pick and choose which singers make it famous, so they can focus on finding more predictably controlled acts and tune them to the sound they like. With a band you’re stuck with 4-5 personalities that may snap at any moment.

Killed? Nah, severely wounded yes but on the bright side streaming has allowed a lot of up and coming bands back then more exposure. It's evolving as it had generations before and there's some stuff out there that's grown on me.

Yeah they were promised a room full of heroin if they all formed bands.

one band admitted they never wore flannel until Nirvana hit big and all of a sudden, they were told to make their image more “Seattle.”

that's been the case with a ton of bands, the Beatles were greasers at one time, Kenny Rogers tried to hack it in pop, Bob Marley used to have a group that dressed like, and wanted to be the next Temptations before he went all rasta, Jimmy Buffett initially gave country and western a go, and on and on

No, but Alice In Chains was once a hair metal band (called “Alice ‘n Chains”) before it switched genres to grunge.

No.

Your timelines must be way off. Facelift was released in 1990. Nevermind, and the media blitz of “Grunge” didn’t take off until 1991/1992.

Facelift is not a hair metal album. Just stop talking

ETA I understand that most of, if not all of the grunge era bands were not what they ended up being when they started.

But that goes for almost every single band ever.

I'm confused at what you're saying.

Regardless of anything else said in this thread, the fact that Alice in Chains started out as a glam, hair metal band is not in dispute.

Edit: In addition, the timeline is that Soundgarden got signed to A&M in 1989.

The major labels were swooping into Seattle to sign bands well before Nevermind came out.

DGC didn't just get lucky with Nivana and Nevermind. They already knew a scene existed and there was buzz in Seattle before 1991.

In 1989, Alice N Chains became Alice In Chains and switched to grunge. In 1990, the members of Mother Love Bone hired Eddie Vedder to be their new singer and they switched from Glam Metal to grunge.

Henry Rollins didn’t start grunge in 1984 or at any other time.

everybody in the music world "nicks" things from people before them, alters their "brand" to put food on the table, most young'n's on here don't realize (c)rap had been around for decades before it became a gazillion $ industry

Mother Lovebone was the OG “grunge” band and a million percent authentic.

They all arrived to capture what MLB created. Was magic.

No. ANC wasn’t even really the precursor to AIC. Staley was the only common person between the two and I don’t see where there was any common music.

Wrong.

I can tell you from experience that signing with a label, you give up pretty much all rights to what you wear on stage, your sound, if they choose, and legally, your music itself. They control your "musical persona". You can usually negotiate a few different aspects of a deal, but those 3 are pretty much set in stone. They aren't going to take the risk if you aren't willing to be a puppet. May have been different in the early 90's though idk.

No, that was Staley’s old band that broke up. Several years later he, Starr, Kinney and Cantrell formed a band and asked the old members of Alice N Chains if they could use the name.
