New conspiracy theory. Was grunge put together the same as boy bands in the 90's?

It’s not entirely inaccurate, especially for “post-grunge” bands (Candlebox, Collective Soul, Bush, Creed, etc.)

I forget who it was, but one band admitted they never wore flannel until Nirvana hit big and all of a sudden, they were told to make their image more “Seattle.”

There are more stories out there like that.

I love a good conspiracy but this seems like a reach.

If you want to consider Red Hot Chili Peppers "Grunge" they were kicking it way back in the early 80's. But that's sort of a weird conversation, whether RHCP is lumped in with the grunge side of things.


**Blood Sugar time frame, specifically, for anyone not quick enough to come up with that assumption on their own. Ya know, sorta like the subject matter indicates, when grunge first came together in the 90s.

“Grunge” became a catch-all term for music with heavy metal riffing but with a punk aesthetic (the heavier Soundgarden variety and more punk variety of Nirvana, and the spectrum in between) with introspective lyrics.

Some of the songs on Blood Sugar Sex Magic, most notably Under the Bridge, are “grunge-y” so it’s not any wonder how RHCP got lumped in with the Seattle scene, even though they’re from LA.

grunge was just garage punk band rock on major record labels, guitar/bass/drums
no keyboards or very little production effects, no shouting lyrics ike punk music except early nirvana of course

I was referring specifically to RHCP’s sound on Blood Sugar Sex Magic (which was actually released on the same day as Nirvana’s Nevermind and Soundgarden’s Badmotorgfinger).

You’re right in that they’re predominantly funk metal throughout their career, but the singles Under the Bridge and Breaking The Girl have stylistic overlap with grunge...hence them getting lumped in with the Seattle scene at the same time it was breaking.

I always laugh when grohl talks about his time in nirvana as “disco drumming as loud as I can play” because its true

frick it. Weather or not they were back when I was a teenager and still have my Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains CD somewhere in my house it's the music I grew up with. Sue me.

Besides, PR manufactured Pearl Jam is certainly better than today's weepy vagina, ivory tower preaching, hypocritical, and Tom Ricketts shilling Edward Jerome Vedder and Pearl Jam.
