The next generation is absolutely fricked.
It is ranked fairly high.

One in eight freshmen at UC San Diego place below high-school levels in math, according to a new report from the university’s Senate–Administration Workgroup on Admissions.
It is ranked fairly high.

The report shows a rapid change over just five years. Between 2020 and 2025, the number of incoming students whose math skills were below high school level rose nearly thirtyfold and 70% of those students fell below middle school levels. This roughly translates to about one in twelve members of the freshman class.

UCSD’s remedial math program was not designed for this volume or for the kinds of gaps students now bring, according to the report. Before the pandemic, fewer than 100 first-year students enrolled in remedial courses.
quote:That is absolutely insane.
In contrast, 921 students were placed into remedial math classes in fall 2025, representing 11.8 percent of the freshman class. Instructors also found that a growing share of students arrived with gaps that trace back to middle-school and even elementary-school math, prompting UCSD to create an additional remedial course and broaden the curriculum.

A quarter of students in remedial math got perfect high school scores.
The report points to several factors behind the decline. Statewide assessments show that 11th-grade math performance dropped during the pandemic and has not fully recovered. Chronic absenteeism remains high. At the same time, the elimination of SAT and ACT scores removed a consistent measure of math preparation.

HS math varies, are we talking 2+2 or advanced trig?

Not everyone belongs in universities. Community colleges used to be the place for remedial work, but now they let everyone in to flunk their freshman years because of that sweet delicious Pell Grant and student loan money.

According to their study, 9% couldn’t do 66 + 44 and 25% got 7+2=x+6 wrong.
This is basic math.
It’s insane.

I can do both of those in my head. Without putting in actual effort.
And the UC system is supposed to be the smart kids. Cal State is for dummies.

Wonder what party they will vote for in the next election

Blame the 60 plus years of failing schools. Less money to the classroom, more administration. Every school system I know has bloated 6 figure administration staff.

It’s really 7 out of 8 but they mis-counted

I think I found the problem. If only we could have predicted this result.

All of my kids tested into Calculus 2 in college and they went to Louisiana public schools. There are good schools out there and smart kids. I think some of these kids aren’t college material and DEI is being pushed. Not everyone is college material.
