If you knew it was gambling from the get go, and you still thought you could work it out, you’re enabling her. Cut her off, transfer the debt to her name, maybe MAYBE pay for rehab, and follow tour wife’s lead as it’s her credit score that was fricked and it was her mom that did it.

Jesus. Guy. I know I'm no OT Baller. But that's a lot of money that she basically stole from yall.

I'd hate to have to sever a relationship with my mother-in-law, but that's a lot of money. I would go to the police, honestly. Absolutely zero chance I would help to pay off her lies and terrible spending habits.

I would also get the credit card entity involved. They have some responsibility/negligence.

Get the debt transferred if possible. File a formal complaint on the CC company or bank whomever. Needs to be in writing.

Get your Mil help if it was for gambling or substance abuse. I wouldn't get the law involved if she bout to sell the house and can cover the debt with profits

When you can't trust someone not to do this, you cannot trust them with anything, particularly your children.

A kid might do this and recover. A grandmother has likely done this many times and gotten away with it. This is not something she just "did" at this stage in her life. This is who she is.

Be in denial about it if you wish, but I'm telling you the God's honest truth.

And you are wanting to clean up the mess she caused to try and save the wife and MIL relationship?

Come on man. This is a very, very simple decision. You make her pay the money back to save you and your wife's borrowing power in the future and cut off any relationship with her until she has proven she can be a responsible adult.

Not really. It’s simply an attempt to stimulate the brain with pleasure hormones.

She does need help though.

Nah. OP is thinking about the free daycare service his MIL provides and how his life will be impacted by this major change.

Since it was your wife's identity that was stolen, I think you have to follow your wife's lead on what she wants to do.

I’m so sorry. I don’t know how this happened. I didn’t know what I was doing. Oh god I’m so sorry. I never meant to hurt you. It won’t happen again. Just help me this one time. I’m going to sell my house and pay you back. I swear. Don’t take my grandkids from me. You know me. I can do better. Just help me a little. I can stop. I’m sorry. I love you. Don’t call the cops or anything because I’ll lose my job. Life has just been so hard since I lost my husband. You know how good of a person I am. We can work this out. I’m sorry. I love you.

I wonder if that’s the conversation he had. You think I’m close?

Well, unfortunately there are plenty of all types of addicts in my family. The thing about the ones that buy crap - a lot of time the stuff can be sold (not always)

With gambling the money is almost always lost bc if they win, they want to keep on winning and of course you can’t always win

That’s what i meant - of course all if it induces the same high
