Have you ever had a friend/family member hit rock bottom with booze/drugs/*insert addiction here* and you/someone else put together an intervention for said person?
If you wanna salvage a relationship with MIL, this is that time.

She’s an addict. And if you enable her she will destroy your life. All addicts do that. Every single one of them. And after a certain point they are all sociopaths who will prey upon their closest relationships to feed their addiction. She’s at that point. You should seriously talk to an addiction counselor and have them explain that to you.
Exactly. The very last thing you should do with any addict is enable them, give them an excuse or a free pass.
THEY WILL DO IT AGAIN!!
If not to the OP, then they’ll do it to someone else.
She needs to get a serious wake up call by having charges brought against her, or having an intervention that makes her realize she needs to go to an Addiction Recovery Center and get in a recovery program.
ETA- She stole her daughter’s identity to feed an Addiction. If that’s not a wake up call to her then I don’t know what would be short of going to jail.

My best advice.
This is a family problem.
wife + 3 sisters. That's 4 people who should split the burden of this fraud.
Wife needs to demand that the family share in this burden each. pay off the cc debt now or cops would be forced to be called. it's easy to have opinions if they have no skin in the game. Splitting 5k 4 ways is way more tolerable.
Part of this deal is getting MnLaw help and force her to a rehab situation. Without this, the family is pissing in the wind.

I’d help her pay it off and say the next time anything happens that you’d be reporting it to police
And I will be damned if I ever let her watch my kids again, she is a liar and a thief.

I'm not married, but it seems like it should be a decision that comes from his wife.
Another consideration is once you get the state involved, it may affect her job and professional license... thereby diminishing her ability to repay her debts AND creating a financial drain that will one way or another make its way back into OP's or his kids' lives.
I'd maybe hold that over her head in an intervention but it wouldn't be my first response.

It’s gambling. Didn’t want to come out with it because OT might be able to figure out who I am or my family.
You want to tell your wife to mend fences with MIL that stole upwards of $20k from her and put her credit record at risk and the best reason you gave is she babysits and is nice?

This is terrible advice and a great way to lose not only your mom but your 3 sisters as well. If my BIL’s came to me because my MIL did this to them I’d tell them frick no. The audacity to think I need my BIL’s to pay for something they didn’t do, had not part in, and were unaware of would send me through the roof.

Only people that I have seen do this are alcoholics or drug users.

A “mistake” is oops I dropped a glass of water…what she did was calculated theft. You say she’s a great grandmother, but would you want someone who obviously has these issues around your children? What if your children are the next ones she opens credit for? Hell she may have already.

I’m not insinuating he go to the cops without his wife’s blessing. I was simply wondering why going to the cops wasn’t an option. If that’s the option his wife wants, that’s what he needs to do is all I was saying.

Any kind of addict will do this
Gambling is very addictive and costly

The sharing of paying off the debt is not going to happen

Are you able to reach out to some gambling anonymous-type groups that could help guide y'all through an intervention process? Or a therapist?
ETA: the threat of legal action might be your saving grace here for your family and hopefully her

Wonder how many other people she did this to? Other friends or family? Any of her patients?
