Up to 20 missing after flash floods in the Grand canyon

GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK — More than 20 people might be missing or unaccounted for after a major flash flood in Grand Canyon on Saturday, and National Park Service officials are seeking information about them.
The people may be missing after the flooding in Bright Angel Canyon and the Phantom Ranch area, the park service said in a news release. Park staff and Arizona law enforcers are continuing to evacuate the areas and account for people who might have been in the area at the time.
The flash flood began about 2:30 p.m. Saturday and caused significant damage throughout Bright Angel Canyon, park service officials said.
"Nearly all footbridges spanning Bright Angel Creek were destroyed, eliminating hiker access across the creek. Grand Canyon National Park staff are continuing to assess damage to trails, bridges, utilities, facilities and other infrastructure," the agency said in a separate news release.
The Colorado River is also closed to river traffic as metal structures and debris are entering the river after the flooding

I have camped down there many times. There are Rangers down there and the camp grounds are in very specific areas.
I am surprised they would not have had a warning of a flash flood coming down the canyon. If this is 2 pm it’s the middle of the day.

My interpretation is it was Bright Angel Creek that flooded, not the main canyon. Those desert flash floods can come from thunderstorms many miles away. There may not be a cloud in the sky where you are and all the sudden a wall of water.

Lack of warning is the primary requisite of a "flash" flood.

I think so, at least on the North Rim. It is also an area impacted by the big Dragon Bravo wildfire last year which could make flash flooding worse.

Bright Angel - you're walking down into that side canyon - and then some more
It'll be a long walk back up for some and most people on this trail are day hikers and not really wanting to spend the night out.
