I phrased that incorrectly. The river would be cut in two as far as navigation is concerned. A shoal would form near ORCS. Barges would not be able to pass this until infrastructure was put in place to combat it. Nothing coming up the river could go north of ORCS, and nothing coming down the river could go south of ORCS.

Mississippi has improved quite a bit in the past 5 years. Education ranking improved 3 spots, state is not losing residents, and trying their best to emulate Texas tax structure

I posted this in another thread yesterday, but the Atchafalaya would have overtaken the Mississippi likely by the end the end of the century, if not surely by 2200 if not for the ORCS.

She would have done it in 73 if ORCS would have failed. Probably would have taken out I10 and Morgan City in the process.

Can someone explain to me what exactly the problem MS is having? How is ORCS causing silt to end up on land owned by MS school districts? What are the MS school districts doing with this land?
Also, ORCS has been around for generations, why is this an issue now?
Saying we should get rid of ORCS is unconscionable. It would not only be a death penalty to all of SE Louisiana Baton Rouge to the gulf, but the infusion of water into the Atchafalaya would absolutely destroy the communities along it. There is a big reason people freak out during high river events where ORCS is threatened.
The economic disaster would be unthinkable.
Having said that, if the structure does place real problems on MS, then that needs to be addressed. Do a fedgov buyout of the land, or lease for a few million a year or something.

The ORCS is its own worst enemy though and will be its own undoing.
Its almost like some folks dont grasp why the river stage records keep getting broken.

Nope. In no way would ORCS ever flood NO. It would cause many problems (some catastrophic), but not flooding.

You may be right. And I am not an expert (except on the OT). But wouldn't Southwest Pass silt up pretty quickly, which would pretty much close the river to navigation upstream? It may take a while to shallow up in New Orleans, but it would not matter if the mouth of the river effectively closed up.

I guess you could dredge like a MF to keep it open. Another big issue would be saltwater intrusion.

I agree with you. That said, last time they opened Morganza (2011, I think) it was not nearly as bad as predicted for those in the spillway.
