VIP Grinders noted that an unofficial nude beach on Ship Island is one of travelers' favorites. The barrier island is about 12 miles offshore.

If you're looking for a beach with the clearest water, Getmyboat recommends checking out Ship Island for "powdery white sand and turquoise waters that rival those of the Caribbean." You can also check out Fort Massachusetts, which dates back to the Civil War. The island has a swimming area, bathrooms, pavilions and a concession store. A public ferry runs from March to October out of Gulfport.

There are also umbrella and lounge rentals.

BeachCatcher, a site for beach reviews, notes the furthest end of the beach is considered the "nudist section."

"Getting there can be tiring – it's a long hike from where the boat drops you off. Few folks journey to that part of the island, but the ones who do have been going there for years, and they know what's the deal over there," the site wrote.

"From the main beach, you'll need to head east at least a mile (or maybe more, depending on the number of textiles) before taking everything off. There won't be a big crowd of nudists to greet you. Nude bathers have plenty of room to spread out, and the limited capacity and schedule of the ferry service ensures that crowds will never be too large, especially on remote parts of the beach," the site noted.

"You may find only a handful of nude sunbathers on summer weekdays, with higher numbers of nudists on weekends. Rangers tend not to bother nudists in this area, but, if you see a ranger, it is still a good idea to suit up until he or she is gone. Furthermore, you should absolutely be discreet if you see textiles approaching."
