This is what the police should be. Citizens should be defending themselves and their property. Can't count on the cops to do so.

Italy has peace officers (caribinieri) and those are the ones you see everywhere patrolling, ticketing and responding to the vast majority of calls/disturbances.

They also have police (polizia) but they only respond to violent crimes.

It actually is a good point that the peace officers which most people deal with 90% of the time are usually not aggro acting in the least (even if they can be frustratingly bureaucratic) -- a lot more like a managers at the Post Office than tough guys.

You realize that won't happen right....what's going to happen is that they will disband local PD's and then will realize that there is no one to catch the bad guys....then guess what.....bam federalized police.

And there it is....we are already advocating for federalized police....also hard to imagine that a federalized police force in America would turn out the same way it did in Italy.

Yes, but with a largely unarmed public. That ain't America.

hope they do it. The cautionary tale will set back progressives another decade.

It’s the moderates who practice plantation politics. They are the most racist group of voters in the country.

The crime rate, especially homicides, went through the roof and the city is now in a downward spiral crisis that they can't seem to get out from under.

Wait though...i thought black lives matter? Or do they just matter when it's a cop who is responsible, and them killing themselves in staggering numbers is cool?

All of this....compare European murder rates to US murder rates....it's not in the same ballpark.

What America would get would be a boundless jurisdiction version of the FBI......it would be horrible.

When I was in Europe they had soldiers in the airports, streets, and in front of restaurants with machine guns with their fingers on the triggers.

What's crazy is the vast majority of the replies to that thread are all for it. Someone even cited fricking Northern Ireland as an example of a place where it worked . Northern Ireland.

Yeah they don't realize they have dudes gaurding public areas with assault rifles. Or the riot police ready to go at every big football rivalry.

This reminds me of the new age parents who try to “have a conversation” with their 6 year old instead of punishing their children like responsible parents.
