This has a lot to do with it.

I worked at a Winn Dixie in high school for like six months. Not uncommon to see a pallet of milk sitting out in the backroom for an extended period of time while the people in that department were rearranging the dairy cooler, outside smoking, etc.

From my experience the spoilage issue directly relates to the type of container it's in. Plastic containerized milk usually have a week to 10 days expiration dates. Paper/ cardboard containers usually have expedition dates a month to 6 weeks out. I've nearly always had milk in plastic containers spoil before it's expiration date. I don't have that issue anymore buying milk in paper cartons.

As an old timer I can recall the times when dairy creameries ran their own refrigerated truck home delivery routes. Milk was delivered in glass bottles in those times. I don't recall having spoilage issues back then.

Plastics can be wonderful products in many instances, but they don't work well for my milk consumption patterns.

I throw it away if it burns my throat.

I have thought milk was disgusting ever since I threw up some mild in the first grade. I live alone and don’t buy milk. No problem with cheese or any other dairy product, though.

I keep a small package of powdered milk in my freezer for recipes calling for milk, etc.

To me, Trader Joe's milk tastes better than other milk. It doesn't last long enough for us to worry about smell.

I’ve noticed milk sometimes not making it to the date in recent years, but I don’t recall milk having dates that are 3+ weeks out years ago as where that is the norm now.

Btw, I like near end milk out of the carton. Milk tastes a bit better as it ages.
