Mid City hipsters thought they could stop Jesuit from building a "bridge"

The good news for the hipsters is that their Prius's should have no issue fitting under the private walkway

Question: When is a bridge not a bridge? Answer: When it proves more expedient to call it by some other name.
Jesuit High School wants to build a thing over Banks Street. It’s a bridge, and they called it a bridge until they didn’t. When they ran into unexpected opposition, they decided it wasn’t to be a bridge at all. It was to be a “private walkway,” for which the Comprehensive Zoning Ordinance conveniently has no rules. The amazing part is that, so far, City Hall has gone along with this ploy.
Maybe that’s not so amazing. Maybe I shouldn’t be surprised. The privileged and powerful are used to getting what they want. That’s kind of how things work.

So why do the hipsters oppose an aerial walkway over Banks Street? Wouldn't that make the area more walkable?
ETA: they are afraid that it will damage the tree canopy somehow, and are also feeling slighted that Jesuit found a loophole which did not require them to go through a long and unnecessary series of public meetings just to connect two properties which they already own.

If its not affecting anyone then why do they give a crap?
On either side of Banks Street right there its Jesuit property
If any vehicle can fit under it and airplanes can fly over it, then it shouldnt bother anyone

I dont know the area, but whats the problem. I would think pedestrian safety is a priority. lots of schools do this

Don't f$$@ with the Jesuits.

They care only because they want to be contrarians to Jesuit or the church.

There are always complainers. These initially objected to the "walkway" blocking natural light and damaging trees.

I never thought there would be significant neighborhood opposition to a pedestrian bridge, but there’s people out there that apparently have nothing better to do like this guy:

Automatically siding against Jesuit because of your lazy hacky use of “hipster” and “Prius.”

Gosh, using the same "logic" these hipsters should be mad at Entergy and every other utility provider that has lines over their heads.

I worked with Bart at XULa for six years. Interesting guy, funny enough, but condescending as well.
There is a better than even chance this thing will be obscured by trees on either side of it in any case. Trees continue to grow, yo. They will surround this thing before long.
I am anything but a Blue Jay, or Blue Jay fan. Kids went to their rival on Elysian Fields. Screw this for forcing me to side with Jesuit. And, just like W.E. if it is so dangerous at Esperanza, then get off of Jesuit's arse and do something constructive instead of always "fighting the power."
quote:He lives near W.E. why NOT push for these instead of bitching about Jesuit? I like Banks Street, right there, pretty spot between Jefferson Davis and it's lake-bound end near St. Patrick Street.
(It is painfully ironic to consider how this private school project flies along with such speed, while public school children in our community continue to be neglected. I could cite safety issues at Jesuit’s next-door neighbor, Esperanza, or the pitiful state of the rickety Lopez Street Bridge which Warren Easton students used for years to get to their practice field. I have to wonder, what are our priorities?)

A bridge between the gym and the school? Makes sense to me.
Chalmette has a bridge over Judge Perez, only school I know with one locally.
The tree canopy is further down the street. To my knowledge there isn't a canopy on side of the main building or the gym at the point of the bridge.
Jesuit has been a good neighbor to that area for decades.
