I cannot imagine buying a vehicle that can call home or get instructions from anyone but the driver. Back 10 or so years ago with the OnStar rumors of tracking and stuff even without subscription I yanked that unit from the wife's truck.

If they can turn off service for people who don’t pay the fee….they can probably brick your car if you social credit score drops below acceptable levels.

wat?

The auto industry is feasting

They are sitting back watching the citizens being force fed the inevitable switch to electric vehicles and licking their chops. The EVs will end up being much cheaper to produce on their end.

At some point, people will buck at these prices. 100k in debt plus a subscription fee? Most services can be done via delivery.

All by design. Own nothing and like it.

Should have led with only available with electric vehicles. I wouldn’t have been as annoyed.

Do not forget the liberal billionairs have said that in their vision of the future, people will not own anything. This means EVERYTHING in their future is pay them as you go.

this sounds like some dystopia Ubik shite. them and the people driving this future

It’s getting widespread quickly. Toyota is already doing it with remote start, BMW was/is doing it for CarPlay and heated seats, GM is forcing Onstar down it’s customers’ throats, and now Mercedes is jumping.

Cadillac has already trialed the vehicle subscription model in NY.

It's the year 2027. In the middle of July you notice your car won't start. You receive a text message from the dealership.

"Hi. This is your local Mercedes dealership. Our records indicate that even though the year is already half over, you haven't invited a single black transgender to your home. In keeping with our ESG goals your vehicle has been temporarily disabled. To enable driving rights, please PayPal $50 to the LGBT AIDS All-stars Foundation to show your commitment as an ally and acknowledge your privilege. Together we can make great things happen!"

While I agree with your sentiment, plan to only drive cars 20 years or older

$1200 on top of the yearly repair bills for a Mercedes. Lord. They will keep you in dept.

Fortunately for Toyotas, there are cheap and easy to install aftermarket options. My guess is you’ll see these alternatives for other brands - and I think there are already consumer protections for non related warranty issues, so the manufacturers can’t deny claims.

This has definitely been known for a while now. Sad how people who bring up slippery slopes are ignored until it's to late.

There should be issues with paying for hardware on the car that can't be used unless you subscribe for it.

BTW - just a reminder while this is fresh - data is being sold to insurance companies. Before they tried to convince you to put a tracker in your OBDII, but now they are cutting deals with the OEMs to get the data directly.

EVs definitely make all of this easier, so yes if you have an EV that's this is the future you are supporting. Remember all the calls for Tesla to brick Russian Tesla's?

If we only had lawmakers that would actually be proactive instead of try to be reactionary only for the cameras, once it's to late.
