Mercedes is the latest manufacturer to lock auto features behind a subscription fee, with an upcoming “Acceleration Increase” add-on that lets drivers pay to access motor performance their vehicle is already capable of.

The $1,200 yearly subscription improves performance by boosting output from the motors by 20–24 percent, increasing torque, and shaving around 0.8 to 0.9 seconds off 0–60 mph acceleration when in Dynamic drive mode (via The Drive). The subscription doesn’t come with any physical hardware upgrades — instead, it simply unlocks the full capabilities of the vehicle, indicating that Mercedes intentionally limited performance to later sell as an optional extra. Acceleration Increase is only available for the Mercedes-EQ EQE and Mercedes-EQ EQS electric car models.

Can't wait for Apple to copy this and hide high resolution camera pics behind a $9.99 per month pay wall.

What would be even more hilarious would be if they hid horizontal videos and photos behind that pay wall. You think vertical videos are a problem now, see what happens once they make that change.

So not only do you pay a stupid price for the car but now you gotta pay to get the privilege to use it.

If they can turn off and on feature based on payment of receiving a subscription fee then that would also mean they COULD also intentionally create a problem that would require service to boost service revenue.

No, of course they would not do that.

0% chance I'd ever purchase a vehicle with some sort of subscription to use its features.

Do not forget the liberal billionairs have said that in their vision of the future, people will not own anything. This means EVERYTHING in their future is pay them as you go.

Like renting a house and having to pay a $10/mo dishwasher fee or something. Screw all that.

I guess this is similar to the old cd/album argument. Physically you buy the item but the “music” or in this case the performance is not owned by the purchaser.

This isn't a comparison. A comparison would be that you buy an album digitally. But, to hear the music at the highest bit rate and with the best fidelity would cost you $4 per year.

Not at all similar. When you buy something like a CD/Album you are buying it for consumer use. Same for vehicles or other consumer goods. When you buy something you should have the expectation that you OWN that product and have full control over that product.

This has been a problem that surfaced with data that Congress should have taken care of long long ago and still to this day they have no intention to address it.

When I buy a product I own it. The company i bought it from should have no rights to anything i do with that product once I OWN it. The data on my use is mine not anyone else to take from what I own.

If there monetization is to give something away for free in exchange for taking your data then that should be fully upfront in 12 font bold letters stating the $$ amount the value your data that they will take. Force them to expose exactly how much the consumer is getting ripped off by all these technologies.

“You will own nothing and be happy!”
-Klaus Schwab

There is a conscious movement in many industries to go to a subscription vs ownership business model.
Started with music…. Where will it end?

I saw one of these things on I-35 yesterday. Funny looking cars.

We're going to continue to see this trend. Everything is going to a subscription based model
