Sacramento might be the epicenter of California politics but I've never found it to be a shithole.
Sacramento is probably the most tolerable city in the central valley but it still mostly sucks. While in general the entire reality of the central CA cities flies in the face of the MUH CULCHA snowflakes on here, make no mistake the GOP dominated parts of California are the absolute worst.
Stockton. Modesto. Fresno. Bakersfield. Find a place in California that votes Republican and you will find some of the most depressing places in the entire damn country. Sandpits filled with reedy methheads who make humanity seem like a grave mistake. And also, a pretty easy rebuttal to anyone who claims gov't assistance = lazy brown people getting free shite. I wanna say at some point in the 80's/90's the like 7 of the 10 counties with the biggest percentage of people on welfare/food stamps were all in the San Joaquin Valley and voted Republican.
I was born and raised in Baton Rouge and will never melt about it like people on here for no other reason than I've been to central California many, many times

East St. Louis
Gary
Stockton
Fayetteville, NC
DILLON, SC - one of the worst.

any list of the biggest shitholes in the US that does not include either Stockton or Bakersfield is instantly and permanently incorrect

Trucker chiming in - based on areas I've been to I'd rank US shitholes as follows:
1) Laredo TX
2) Blue Island IL (Southside Chi)
C) Camden NJ
?\ Memphis TN
Q) West Memphis AR
As luck would have it, right after I posted this list I got a 2 stop delivery route to Memphis and Laredo
Also, the smaller municipality of Paterson, NJ gets added to my list - just picked up from a box company in that town and good fricking grief - that main street called "Madison Ave" is one of the roughest looking areas I've seen. Give that a good street view if you're interested in seeing that dump.

Flight is a legit experience. One of the better restaurants in the region.

Linking this thread next time some clown on the SECr suggests moving the baseball tourney from Hoover to Memphis in Autozone Park.
We recently drove from Bham to Fayetteville for the football game. On the way back, we specifically detoured through West Helena, AR just to avoid Memphis. What a dump.

The only reason you should be close to the airport is because you are on your way to the airport to catch a flight.
Memphis has a lot of great areas like South Main, Overton Square, Cooper Young, the majority of East Memphis, Shelby Farms and then some of the burbs. If crime stats scare you like it probably does most of you the small town dwellers, you should stay away from Memphis and most other southern cities.
If you like great food, good people, low COL, a very attractive job market, quality entertainment, a shitty public school system and an abundance of hood (which is mostly avoidable), head on over to Memphis and maybe bring a firearm juts in case.

I go to Memphis every month, it is a shithole but far from the worst. Whole state of NJ is worse. Baltimore? Memphis can't hold a shite-candle to that place.

Pine Bluff is terrible. A lady I went to church with me was moving there and joked she has to start worrying about mosquitoes now. I told her mosquitoes are the least of your worries. She should invest in Kevlar.

East St.Louis(ill) and Venice (Ill) say, hold on there.

The biggest dump in America is easily Detroit. Been there several times for work and it would be hard to find a more blighted, pathetic and corrupt city in the country.

Yeah.
If Memphis is the worst place you have been to, you need to experience new places.
