Grew up in Memphis. Can confirm, is a shithole. Not as bad as NOLA though.

It’s fine if there are nice parts and you like the city, just say that. To pretend it isn’t a violent, dangerous arse city is ridiculous. two things-
1) a lot more goes into calling a city a shithole than raw crime numbers. chicago is a beautiful, world class city that has everything you'd want in a city. memphis is a shithold. gary, indiana is a shithole.
2) those numbers are much less shocking on a per capita basis. st louis, detroit, memphis, new orleans, br, etc. have higher murder and violent crime rates. but most importantly, chicago is probably the most segregated city in the country and the vast majoirty of the crime takes place in terrible neighborhoods you would never visit. it's nothing like tourists getting caught in crossfire on bourbon.
