This.

I would never advise someone to go into medicine if their primary goal is financial at this point in time. A government takeover of healthcare is very likely IMO and that is a lot of risk and uncertainty for medicine and its mammoth salaries.

Dear OP,

Suck it up and go into engineering.

Signed,

An attorney who often wishes he had his engineering degree.

i'd say med school, but only if you really want it. it's an understatement to say med school is insanely challenging and will take over every aspect of your life.

I will join what I assume is the 100% consensus and state that the practice of law is terrible and every lawyer hates it. You can make ok $ but it is emphatically not worth it.

Gotta give the OP props on hubris. Dude figures he can just walk on into either law or med school and finish like he’s choosing a big screen TV.

shite man if it’s all about money then go to a technical school, get an instrumentation degree and go work in the plants. You’ll save money and time, and you’ll make bank pretty soon. Then you can go get that fishing boat you want.

Also the idea of being married and having kids at like 35 before being able to finally make money after all my hard work seems pretty shitty.(4 years under grad,4 years post grad,4 years residency, and you don't get to start practicing medicine right away:So about 35) All that time spent just to have to start saving for my future kids. For what, so they can go to college and do the same thing and provide for their kids and never actually get to live or spend that money that we worked so hard to get? Whats it all for ?So they can just repeat the same fricking process and die with no purpose and the next generation to do it over and over again? Pretty fricking shitty to think about.

Cousin's husband went to med school on the military dime, Was in ROTC in undergrad, then in the reserves during med school. They paid him a stipend and all that time counted toward retirement. No student loan debt, no malpractice insurance. He retired at 38 with 20 years, close to half of that being time in school. Now in private practice and collecting his military pension.

It’s over. There is no time.

you do realize I have to decide where I want to take my career and work towards it?I can't just blindly go through school with an irrelevant major and not have a goal then just expect to apply to any school senior year ?

I'm sure it's been said already in these 6 pages, but if you go into medicine for the money, you are an idiot setting himself up for disappointment.

People always ask me “should I go to law school?”

I always tell them the same thing: if you want to be a lawyer, then yes.

I had the same reservations about student loans, job market, and uncertainty of the type of law I would practice. But at the end of the day, I knew I wanted to be a lawyer, so I went to law school.

Went to LSU, got incredible experience in the JAG Corps for 4 years immediately after, and now enjoy a rewarding career in private practice where I get to help people, set my own schedule, and make a damn good living, especially considering the work/life balance.

That is actually one reason why I am happy to be in medicine. While in a socialized medicine world my salary will go down and quality of care will decrease for all, my family will always have access to the best. Doctors look out for each other.

The answer is med school, but if you have to ask, you prob won't make it through med school. So law school it is.

passion is in medicine, but I'm currently pre-law. Only reason I was law because I was concerned about the future of medicine and if it would be worth it after all the debt.

Go into intellectual property law. My brother works from home except 1 day a week when he goes into the firm for conferences. He loves it.
