The witnesses are lying or this is BS.

The witness quote could be completely misleading.

Of course McKnight would be apologizing if gasser had already pulled his gun - they were probably all hot and yelling up to that point.

Doesnt mean joe had to die.

And unless new facts emerge gasser should be in jail for life.

It was someone else? McKnight shot himself?

Is it in any way possible that they think they have the wrong guy?

It's technically possible but highly unlikely. The guy gave the cops a gun when he turned himself in. There were several witnesses at a busy commercial intersection who watched the entire thing go down.

You think the majority of people who are going to come loose and riot about this understand the system and how they have to charge or release in 24 hours? You're really giving them credit.

There must be some exculpatory evidence that isn't in the news write up (shocking, I know). Even if the authorities weren't sure which charge to go with - manslaughter, murder 2, murder 1, etc. - they could charge him with manslaughter and then update later with an amended filing. Something doesn't add up.

Splitting hairs here but still legally allegedly....

Bizarre (as was mentioned here) is a good term to describe this turn of events.

Knowing that there's no question he did kill him, they have to have some pretty solid evidence of justification to release him the next day

Not sure if it was confirmed, but rumor was he was an ex sheriff. He was also driving an Infiniti. Perhaps he's well connected?

I understand an Infiniti isn't the end all, be all, but you get the point.

ETA: To clarify for the morons, he may have decent financial resources, which combined with the rumor he's an ex sheriff, could have afforded him the benefit of the doubt and the legal representation needed to get out so quickly.

I don't think we are getting the whole story. Do you know how much clout it would take to gun down a unarmed man, then walk the next day???

But they didn't say the investigation was closed. They said it was ongoing, and charges could be coming.

Normally in that situation, they charge the guy with something within 24 hours just so they can keep him.

Something tells me that if this was a 23 yr old black male as the shooter, he would be charged with something, and then if the investigation reveals he should not be charged, they drop the charge and release him.

By releasing him now, you are giving the impression that this was, at least as of the moment, a justified hit. It's hard for me to believe that if McKnight had no weapon on him.

That certainly is interesting. There would have to be very strong evidence to indicate self defense.

There must be a lot more to the details of this case. Possibly road rage on behalf of McKnight.

It sounds like the witness account is complete BS.

Does NOLA have video at major intersections?

That is pathetic

They can't hold him indefinitely. If they know they won't be able to bring charges (for whatever reason) before that period is up, then releasing him is appropriate.

So, to me, the question that should be asked is what is preventing them from bringing charges right now.

When shite like this happens it 100% justifies all the ill feeling black folks feel towards the system. This is a mind boggling decision and does nothing for JP's racist image.

There has to be video from one of the businesses or a bystander (cell phone vid?) and it has to show McKnight being the aggressor. That is the only way I see this happening so quickly. Why wouldn't JPSO say that though?

Who are the witnesses? Are they the same folks who refuse to cooperate with police in any black on black crime?
