I remember when the McDonald’s on Opelousas upgraded to the playground. I had my birthday party in the party room and I remember the manager telling my mom that they were putting in a playground. He seemed very excited.

Now you are talking, that was my parks play ground.
My elementary school was the same except we had really high swings made of chain and old conveyor belts from the gravel pits.
I think two kids in my little class of 90 broke collar bones falling out of those swings and monkey bars.

I loved growing up in the 90s and all, but the 80s looked like a different story. The 80s looked like a blast.

In this case, it is scapegoating, but its fine, we all charge an added tax to make up for the hate.
If you understand McDonald's is first and foremost a real estate company you understand they have been reducing their footprint to reduce RE taxes. Every year a higher percentage of customers use drive-throughs at fast food restaurants, so fewer used the playgrounds. People who use the playground for hours didn't actually spend much money, and it certainly did not offset the maintenance, cleaning, extra property tax, and yes, liability costs.
Liability did play a part, but they would have died off at nearly the same pace even without the liability costs.

The thing about the hamburger jail was there was one way in and one way out. I remember kids filling it up and then you couldn't get out. Sucked.

Being a kid in the 80's was incredible. It's like everything was made and marketed toward kids. Restaurants, movies, tv shows, games, the entire mall, etc. The world was our oyster.
