How was this not thought of before? Incredible story.

Because venture capitalists won't back anything that is simply practical and/or lacks a cool story. Instead of a drone that drops a floatie to be used while the same ol' lifeguards use the same ol' boat/jet ski to respond in the same ol' way, the VCs want a paper valuation based on:

- Founder must be a 19-year old college dropout who's never actually done anything in the real world and knows nothing about the practical application of anything
- Female/minority preferred
- Founder must have a sellable personal brand that has zero to do with actually DOING anything (always wears a certain hat, black turtleneck, etc.)
- Solution must involve at least 2 of the following - AI/ML, blockchain, or "green tech"

Drone drops life vest while lifeguards respond as usual doesn't cut it.

I think a drone submarine could also work here.

I almost posted this the other day, but it looks staged, so I didn't.

I think there is something that can be done using drones and visual recognition software.

Set them up on a patrol with cameras rolling and a light or audible alert.

If they detect from the air rip current imagery they can sound the alarms and clear the water.

They could work autonomous

Yep, he didn't do like so many people today would--------take video of the girl until she went under and drowned.

Thats what I thought the story was going to be....he was video taping her and lifeguards were able to find her. Truly a great story.....

How is a white 30 something year old in Florida and doesn't know how to swim ?

Someone should throw him in the pool

Judging by the video not many people can swim in those conditions...

Quick thinking on his part for sure and it definitely saved that young ladies life. Talk about being at the right place at the right time and having a stroke of genius to even think of that.

I am glad she is safe, but swimming in a red flag area equals a dumb girl

If you can get a drone to deliver high quality video in real time it would revolutionize offshore fishing like live scope has revolutionized fishing in general. Imagine being able to scan beyond what you can see from even the tallest of towers on a boat?

What the hell are you talking about? Quite the rant about VC not getting into the lifeguard business.

They also make remote control, powered surf rescue boards. The problem with UAVs is wind.

U Safe is a pretty legit design.

i'm going to assume drones that run lures in the ocean have taken that into consideration in their design.
