Making Tesla car batteries creates as much pollution as a normal car for 3-6 years

In other words, you could drive a gas powered car in the US for at least 3 years, and possibly as many as 6, before you reach the pollution level for the manufacture of batteries for the Tesla electric car.

quote:

Under the assumptions above, the CO2 payback for a 100-kilowatt-hour Tesla battery comes out to just under three years in the best case and six years in the worst case. The average car in the U.S. lasts for about eight years, but many don’t expect EV batteries to last that long. On the other hand, lots of people are trying to figure out how (or whether) to give the batteries a second life, for applications like stationary storage.

But I'd pay a lot less in gas.

Coincidence that this news comes out after the Musk made fun of a republican president who loves coal and oil.

Also chemtrails.

And colonialism.

Isn't there a pollution level for the "manufacture" of gas?

Which gas powered car? How do you know that? Which level of gas? With what maintenance?

I bet 3 years ago the stat was even more in favor of gasoline cars. Just imagine what this stat will say in 3 years time.

Let's not forget that lithium mining and refining ain't exactly a green process in and of itself either.

You didn't read the whole story. You posted only enough info to support your point.

That's probably assuming the gas powered cars go the speed limit. Get those puppies going 100-150 and they'd pollute much less with the decrease in gasoline usage.

It is about the end result. If we could separate ourselves from the ME, and use technology to drive renewables, then we wouldn't have a need to start, and maintain war in that part of the world. We could tell SA to pound sand. Harvesting wind, solar, etc can also be used to colonize the universe. Hard to manufacture petroleum on planets that never hosted life.

The bulk of the story analyzes automobile use in US and Sweden and adjust numbers accordingly.

I enjoyed seeing an environmental website celebrate nuclear and hydro power.

Have you seen the prices of those things?

You're more likely to see someone bang a rail and get road head.

Um... the oldest EV cars are still running anywhere from 75-85%. They're about 15 years old.

Why wouldn't I? Everyone has known for years that producing lithium batteries suitable for electric automobiles has significant impacts on the environment.
