After TOPS fees are $2k a semester.
Doesn’t include dorms, books, or parking pass though

Yes we all walked. I walked on the regular from my apartment on State St to what was then CEBA in all kinds of weather because I knew I wasn't going to always find a spot but that was my choice. I still had a parking pass and could have parked other places and walked from there but I chose that. The difference is that because of incompetent management there are no passes for anywhere so there are no choices. and some of these kids don't live on or near campus and they don't all have 7:30 or 9 classes. Don't get me started on my sons trying to get classes they needed the last couple years and the retarded advisors they had to deal with. Bottom line is that LSU is way more poorly managed than it was when more than half this board was in attendance there. The flip side is fine, don't fix it and the good students who don't want to deal with the shite will go elsewhere and it will only get worse form there. Hell its already started.

25 plus years later, and we are still upset about parking. I guess it was never in the master plan.
They likely oversell with the anticipation that not everyone will be there at once.
Give it a few weeks, then students start to cut classes and your daughter will have a spot.

LSU, and many of other schools with large numbers of commuters/off-campus students, all over sell yearly parking passes, sometimes by 1.5x or 2x the number of spaces. This means at peak times there will always be a shortage of spaces, at least for the first few weeks of class.
I get it we all get it but what you aren't hearing is its not a matter of oversold and trying to find a spot. There are no parking passes available at all so there are no spots to get there early for. THEY DONT HAVE PASSES FOR ANY SPOTS!!!! Right now you have students that live off campus that can't park anywhere on campus no matter the time of day, when or how early they show up or how crowded it is without getting a ticket or towed.

She is that upset for not being able to park to go to class?
I thought you were talking about something important like a football game.

My daughter called in tears this morning because she can't find a parking space. LSU oversold parking passes, and even ran out of passes. The lots this morning are full of circling cars and kids following people walking in the lots hoping they are leaving to find a spot. Is it true that they are taking a bunch of the commuter spots to build more dorms? What a mess they have created.
It has never not been this way the first few days/two weeks of school.

She couldn't find a parking space or she couldn't find a parking space right next to the building her class was in?
There were so many times I used to have to park far away and just walk when I was in school 20 years ago.

Have a returning senior and returning junior and they cant park on campus anywhere. LSU intranet was down half the day yesterday so people couldn't even access their schedules to see the location of their classes.
Eh, this is one of those valuable things college teaches you. How to deal with problems, how to deal with people you don't like, etc.
College was super hard for me. I had to work 2 or 3 part time jobs while in school, I wasn't the smartest dude in the room anymore and had to study hard, was perpetually down to my last $100 all semester long and couldn't spend anything in the summer because I was going to need it all. In hindsight, compared to working and raising kids, it was a cakewalk. I'd love to go back and slap the shite out of myself, I could have absolutely made better grades and thus made more money, and probably graduated a year earlier, if I had applied more effort. I just thought it was hard, it really wasn't. I didn't have a family depending on me. I had me depending on me.

Too many students. How about some admission standards instead of everyone with a pulse getting in.

in my day, the kirby smith parking lot was never more than 15% full until gamedays.
The new dorms have taken away at least 50% of the parking spots in the old Kirby Smith lot, probably more.
Parking is being pushed further and further out.

I’ve never seen regular school traffic like this.
How much did they up enrollment?
It’s like Gameday traffic right now.

They were giving out chick-fil-a biscuits to people using the remote park and go lots and taking the shuttle into central campus yesterday morning. So at least there is that.

Certainly there will be a factor of attendance dropping over the coming weeks, but I still believe things are not running right over there. Should they sell at 110%, 130%, 150% of capacity or greater for parking, I don't know, but they should. That's their job.
It’s not just about attendance dropping, it’s about students learning how to deal with parking & traffic and adjusting accordingly.
Putting that aside - you admit you don’t know how many parking permits they should sell relative to capacity. You also don’t know how many parking permits they did sell relative to capacity. But despite not knowing how many they sold or how many they should have sold, you’re convinced they oversold parking permits? Why?

Here is where I disagree greatly. In the past, LSU was dirt cheap to attend. When I was in school it was less than $1000 per semester. You understood it was an underfunded school, but it was cheap. No longer. The parents paying to send kids here, especially out of state full high tuition, have a right to ask questions.
I’m going to throw some numbers out there for consideration. The following is based on unrestricted funding per FTE (full time equivalent) enrollment, from LSU financial reports using 2024 dollars:
- From 2008 to 2024, tuition & fees funding per FTE increased by $4,941.
- From 2008 to 2024, state appropriations decreased by $9,060.
In other words, every $1 increase in tuition/fee revenue per student over that time period has been accompanied by a ~$1.83 reduction in state funding per student.
The burden has been shifted from direct state appropriations to the students/families and, consequently, to TOPS as well. The latter point is a big one - it’s a double-whammy to families because of higher tuition and less support from TOPS.
Reasonable people can disagree about whether that’s good or bad. I’m not so sure myself. But the reality is that the cost per student is lower today than it was in 2008. The difference (other than inflation) is that families are responsible for a larger portion of that cost.

It was very bad 10 years ago, and now there are 10k more students and fewer parking spaces

They need another parking garage badly. But it’s only because it’s the first week. It’ll get better.
Yall think enrollment is high now wait until we win another national championship. It’ll go up a lot.
