BATON ROUGE — In a new report, Louisiana sits in the top 10 states where residents pay the most on health insurance. Louisiana ranked in spot seven out of all 50 states, with Louisianians spending over 12% of their income on health insurance premiums.

With health insurance costs on the rise, WalletHub looked at the costs of health insurance premiums and median household income in all 50 states. In the “most affordable” states, health insurance premiums consumed less than 5% of the median household income.

According to the 7th annual Employer Health Benefits Survey by KFF, the leading health policy organization in the U.S., annual premiums for employer-sponsored family health coverage in the U.S. was $26,993 in 2025, 6% higher than in 2024.

West Virginia topped the list with the highest spending on health insurance, followed by Vermont and Wyoming. According to WalletHub’s report, residents of West Virginia spent nearly 21% of the state’s median household income.

Louisiana falls just behind Alaska in the list, with Louisianans spending about 12.58% of their income on health insurance.

Late last year, two Louisiana cities ranked in the top 10 U.S. cities spending the most on healthcare. Baton Rouge was number 10, and New Orleans came in number 8 on that list. WalletHub looked at costs of doctor, dentist and optometrist visits, along with the prices of ibuprofen and insulin glargine (used in care for Types 1 & 2 diabetes).

Don't we also rank near the bottom for median household incomes? Based on that I would think that it would be logical that we'd also have one of the higher %age of income spent on xxx.

Yep, that'll do it.

Just throw in some Adderall and Ozempic, and there's the reason.

Limited Competition: Vermont offers very limited choices, with only two major insurance carriers and about 13 plans. In contrast, New Hampshire has a robust marketplace with around 78 plan options, keeping prices down through greater competition.

Add in home owners and flood insurance and we probably spend 30% of our income on insurance to stay in this fricked up state.

Go add up every dollar you spend on insurance right now and you'll probably shite your pants. Its a horrifying exercise to do.

I'm so glad the company I work for has great insurance for near dirt cheap. $40/week for me with a lower than normal deductible, it's one of the main reasons why I haven't changed jobs in a decade.

I pay over 2k a month for a family plan as a business owner. For reference, 15 years ago I paid 975 for the same plan with lower deductible. My plan is fine. The company pays its responsibility but the overall system is a joke and is unsustainable in its current form. I’m lucky I can afford this plan.

I finally threw in the towel and am moving in to rent from a relative on Lake Conroe in Texas.
In addition to the mentioned bullshite we pay in insurance, the rents/real estate prices are much lower in this part of Texas. No thug life around is an added bonus.

I would also like to know what percentage of La. adults (citizens and all forms of immigrants / invaders) are actually paying for medical insurance.

I've paid for my share, non stop for 37 years.

That analysis is hot garbage

A family of 4 making 80k, 150k or 400k all spend about the same on health insurance. Same for a family of 4 making 2 million. There’s not a ton of bells and whistles to add. So considering we are a poor state we will definitely pay a higher percentage of our income. We also have a much lower cost of living. Health insurance is a nationwide problem. Our issue as a state is we don’t have as many high wage jobs. Car insurance is a state problem.

Obama screwed up healthcare for the lower middle class class all the way to the elites. Only ones he helped were the adult Medicaid and we are all paying for it.
