Calling it a loss this year will end the crawfish industry as you know it.

Oh fricking well. That’s free-market capitalism, isn’t it?

I love conjecture.

If I catch 1,000 lbs and sell them for $1.50, I get $1500

If I catch 200 lbs and sell them for $7, I get $1400

Presumably there's some reduction in labor cost as well for catching 20% of normal, no?

Very very few industries in this country operate under free market capitalism in a true sense

The price isn’t $7
It’s $5 and probably dropping again Monday

Maybe a couple hours a day reduction in labor

Still run the ponds/cut bait, etc

Forgive me for not keeping up with the daily dock price. So $1000 a day

a couple hours x number of workers can't possibly be a small number

Reduction in labor
Reduction in materials (sacks)
Reduction in shipping
Reduction in sorting (for those that do)

If farmers were as bad off as we are lead to believe, nobody would still be in business. The bailout would not be to keep businesses afloat, it would be to protect their margins

What will that translate to me buying live per lb at a market?

At $5lb to the farmer you should be able to buy live cleaned purged crawfish for around $6-$6.50lb

Good on declining the EBT. Maybe he won't get the federal assistance.
I would bet a large percentage of the crawfish being bought is done so with EBT.

I’ve been told by few crawfish wholesalers that people would be shocked as to how much crawfish is purchased with EBT, particularly in the New Orleans region.

Just more proof that farmers are the world's largest welfare queens.

Explain all the Texas crawfish farmers between Houston and Beaumont if Clay isn’t conducive for crawfish. If you see soil other than clay or clay loam you are about to walk off into the gulf.

Heavy clay, clay loam, sandy clay loams are all suitable for crawfish production. Soils with significantly high sand composition are not - burrow integrity is comprised and burrows are more prone to drying out - all which affect reproduction.

I don’t think many people will be shocked to be honest. People with sense, usually not on EBT, see the price as outrageous and won’t spend their hard earned money on crawfish. People on EBT, usually bottom tier of society didn’t earn the funds so they will spend it with not a care in the world.

Not reading to find out why this thread is 10 pages but crawfish are a luxury and shouldn't be subsidized by the gov. You can make an argument for the something like corn or soybeans because its the foundation of our entire food supply.

We also going to subsidize the foie gras farmers because the geese don't want to get food shoved down their throat anymore?

the gov should just grow and distribute the crayfish stipend directly.

Ive read through all 10 pages and still want to know who these 3 crawfish moguls are that dictate the price of the market.

And how they are able to control so much crawfish wholesale.

I realize this, I was being a smartass about SWLA’s response about clay soils not being good for crawfish

The newest excuse is now the overpopulation of geese, which are eating the crawfish. Seriously. I spoked to my sauce last night in Acadia Parish. My question is , if the geese are consuming much of the crawfish, wouldn't it make sense for them to come out of the ground, instead of the catches being weak? You can't make this shite up.
