No I’m not
So why don’t you post the historical averages or the number of freezes

Also if it can be done so easy like you say then you go do it
You’ll be rich

Can't make this up. Landry wants federal aid for crawfish farmers but declined federal aid for poor children

Why so angry? I've been cordial w every post ITT. But between your latest replies and other farmer's in the business from last night, this rice and crawfish 'climate' argument isn't making sense to.

How many rice crops do you plant and harvest per year? 1 or 2? If only 1, why?

You don’t know what you are arguing

2 but what does that have to do with Ark being too cold to successfully farm crawfish

The dividing line on ratoon crop rice on a normal year is Ville Platte

Ok. I've added what you've asked for. This is just 2023 but the link has year by year if you need it. We're just comparing due to your assertion it's way too cold to produce bugs as any more than a novelty crop. Fascinating topic overall.

Maybe a few but your avg 55 year old rice farmer in sw LA with maybe one son that is farming with him isn’t looking to expand much

I don't know where you are in SWLA, but I do know if a farm come available, someone is going to plant it and most likely crawfish it.

Because a colleague of yours ITT says rice producers like him only plant rice once and without crawfish, it's unsustainable. Agree or disagree

You see those days under 30 degrees that stuttgart has that Lafayette doesn’t

I know you don’t believe it but that makes a difference

I hunt in ark - they have a week almost every winter where they are totally locked up
Last time we had that down here was the last time we had a bad crawfish season supply wise

And they can’t extend the season in Ark because those June and July temps would cause the crawfish to bury and their irrigation couldn’t keep up

As a proud crawfish farmer with over 10,000 acres dedicated to providing the highest quality crawfish at the lowest possible price, I want to thank Governor Landry for helping a dying industry that has seen plummeting profits. I’ve had to sell two vacation homes in the past four years bc it has gotten so bad. We need this, and we won’t forget it when election time comes

So, all they have to do is mark up price due to supply/demand and seek a government subsidy, if needed.

Do you really not understand there's a difference in temperature between south LA and all of Ark?

Go look at a hardiness zone map for a comparison

The older farmers are getting out the business there’s just not enough young farmers anymore. No young person wants the headache of farming. You can’t just wake up one day and decide to farm.
You understand that subsidies such as this help to create and exacerbate barriers to entry for “young farmers”? If not born into it or mentored/allowed to earn-in by someone with no heirs, etc. there’s a slim chance of new blood getting in the business.

Is Gueydan not in swla because there is plenty of ground that hasn’t been farmed there in a while
Plenty of land in Cameron/calcasieu /alllen that’s cow pasture instead of rice field now

South La would still have 500k acres of rice if every piece of ground that came available from a farmer going broke was picked up and still farmed

There is plenty of land to be picked up to farm
Since you seem to know a bunch of people who want to start DM me their numbers and I’ll point them in the right direction

I'm more beginning to learn this is about farmers cutting rice harvests for crawfish "season" to increase their price per pound produced/sold by acre. And when weather conditions affect that yield, expect the consumer and government to come in to maintain and subsidize the lucrative nature of the product.

Yeah you would probably end up broke like the rest of the past carpetbaggers that came down here to “show us how to farm”

The cold storage with one of the three Crawfish Triumvirates is headed back out of town going towards Lawtell out of Eunice. That may be owned by the Riceland people, I’m not sure.

Right - Dexter Guillory, owner of Riceland Crawfish, also owned the cold storage facility, and his son was in charge of managing that specific aspect of the overall business (again, this was about a decade or so ago). If anything changed after Dexter’s passing I’m not aware of it though I know who to call if I needed to find out.
