There is a licensing board for just about every profession in Louisiana. Our state impedes free commerce at every turn

The state of Mississippi does not license plumbing contractors that work on projects valuing less than $10,000

My mother was a licensed floral designer, she had to put in hours of experience and had to take boards to become certified.

Don't you literally have to take a class and get certified to shampoo people's hair? Smh

Terrible. We should abolish any and all anti-competition gatekeeping of this kind.

Focusing on just one kind of nonsensical government-enforced gatekeeping is stupid.

I suppose a person could establish a volunteer "braiding" service with a bucket for donations. If the donations were not sufficient they could refuse to "practice/train" on repeat individuals.

Mississippi you only have to pay a 25 dollar registration fee and complete a test on health and sanitation guidelines

so inefficient and protects limited groups. same goes for requiring things like florist licenses (not operating business license, but specific to florist), etc. etc. Dumber than requiring dealerships to sell cars.

Thank and a business registration is all that should be required.

I just had to renew my TIPS card to be able to legally serve alcoholic beverages. To renew, it's the same process as getting the card originally.

It's a three hour online course with an exam at the end.

If I screw up and overserve someone, people could die.

If a braider makes a mistake on a braid... no one dies. And they ned 497 MORE hours.

Clown. World.

Right. So the people who try to do the "right" thing get screwed, and the people who don't care about the rules have nothing happen to them, as I'm certain no one is going and busting up illegal uncertified hair braiding.

Part of the reason the culture of noncompliance here is so strong, is because the compliance is so insane.

Louisiana is one the most overly credential/certification requiring states.

Maybe, but you couldn't possibly be more wrong about cosmetology requirements in many states.

Here are Alabama's requirements:

quote:

As a field, cosmetology is regulated by each state. In Alabama, the Alabama Board of Cosmetology and Barbering oversees the education, testing, and licensing of beauty professionals. Before you can qualify for a cosmetology license in this state, you must complete a curriculum of no fewer than 1,500 training hours.

During your 1,500+ hours, you may spend time in the classroom, working with mannequin heads, and working with real clients. No matter which school you attend, the Alabama Board of Cosmetology and Barbering requires you to go through specific courses.

As a student or apprentice, you must complete coursework in the following subject areas:

• Sanitation, sterilization, and allied sciences
• Skin care and makeup
• Manicures and nail care
• Coloring and bleach
• Shampoos and rinses
• Hair cutting
• Hair styling
• Permanent waving

This leaves some wiggle room for schools to focus on other skills and techniques with their remaining hours.

Depending on the cosmetology school you choose, you may study subjects like these:

• Client consultation
• Professional image
• Braiding
• Time management
• Salon procedures and culture

Or:

quote:

3,000 apprenticeship hours may be completed in place of the required 1,500 cosmetology training hours

Then you have all the exams and associated fees to account for.

At least try to figure out if what you are saying is, in fact, true or not.

Some are some legit health and hygiene concerns and standards that have to be addressed. Those braids are just going in for a day. 500 hours is a bit much, though.

Idk how accurate this site is. But if true, there is a huge disconnect somewhere. LINK

To become a certified level 1 peace officer in the state, which includes police officers and deputies, trainees must complete and pass 360 hours at a POST-approved academy

There is absolutely zero reason for it to be easier to become a cop than it is to braid hair.

In some states you need a full cosmetology license for that too. It seems a bit ridiculous when you consider that everyone knows how to wash hair.
