According to the Louisiana Cosmetology Act, braiders must undergo at least 500 hours of training before they are legally certified to braid hair professionally. They also must pass a written exam and complete a practical test that includes performing several different hair styles on a mannequin.

It is an arduous regimen that can take more than 10 months, costing aspiring braiders over $10,000 to earn what is known as an "alternative hair design" permit, according to a natural braiding curriculum on one Monroe cosmetology school's website.

Somehow some legislator is making money off this, as likely as not a black one.

Wait til you see how many hour you need to put in to get a flower arrangement license

Every state requires a certain number of hours of training to get a cosmetology license. I don't think this is unique to Louisiana.

I was about to post this - an exam in front of a panel of peers is a great way to limit your competition.

There is a licensing board for just about every profession in Louisiana. Our state impedes free commerce at every turn

Licensing can be quite the racket.

Seems like overkill , but I just picked a random state to compare:
How do you become a licensed hair braider in Ohio?
General requirements for a hair braider license? Complete a 450-hour program and pass a comprehensive exam to earn a braiding license.
////:
I’m not saying 500 hours is ok, just that a random state requires almost equivalent.

Damn what is that, 10... 11 weeks at 40hrs a week? That's more training than some of the bomb defusers get before heading to Afghanistan to disable IEDs.
Credentialism is getting absolutely out of control. This kind of shite stops entrepreneurs from being able to quit their job and turn a hobby into a career. Sad really, the public should be up in arms over this shite.
