Bugs.

No more fricking getting bitten by a litany of filthy insects in Louisiana.

Currently 1 hour away from Canada border via stops in 7 other states prior. Mostly because my family are in Louisiana and I can't stand the majority of them...and it is partially mutual. I do miss the easy access to the food, but I can make just about anything Louisiana and have the ingredients shipped in. Good enough for me!

For me it's the fricking mold smell. Once I left, I can't stand it for more than a couple of days. The whole Southern half of the state is basically the bottom of a public shower.

What?

You must not have much of an ear for accents.

I’m in Florida and feeling the draw to come home. Left when I was 21 to join the Marine Corps and now 52 and thinking about returning if I land a remote gig. If I do return, contemplating where the best location to settle w/in reasonable drive distance to attend LSU athletic events.

At least MSY has a fair amount of nonstop flights.
to get to somewhere interesting and different from New Orleans you have to either fly or drive all day, no doubt. We drove to Huntsville a couple months ago to go to a show and that drive was miserable. There is nothing to look at within a 6 hour or more radius from MSY

Tired argument. It’s just an excuse for why you’re going to grow old and die two parishes from where you were born and have your mee maw over constantly to clean up after your kids.

I was saying that if you go to those cities for more than a day or two, it’s the same thing over and over. You see the same restaurants, the same shitty strip shopping centers, the same accents. Over and over.

Not that the accents of those places are the same.

You didn’t list the biggest reason of all.

Fire ant allergy pretty severe even with the desensitizing shots. Other allergies kick in every year the same months.

Like to breath .

Got it. I think that is only kind of true in Lafayette and Baton Rouge, but mostly due to size and the specific industries that pull in people from out of the area.

a girl I now regret having dated.

I’m happy where I am though. And after the relationship brought a lot of good things in my life, including my wife, that wouldn’t have happened without it. The girl was just awful.

You can also easily do weekend trips to the Florida Keys, Savannah/Tybee Island

I would scratch Tybee Island off my list of vacation destination spots.

You're born where you're born, you die where your wife's from. And she ain't from Louisiana.

I wouldn’t call it an unusual reason, but I left for opportunities that didn’t exist in Louisiana. I will not be returning because of the ingrained culture of drinking and alcohol being involved in damn near every facet of life there. I get it. There’s not much else to do, and when there is stuff to do, people are usually drinking while doing it. Being healthy is a way of life in Southern California and it’s encouraged. Oh and not to mention, there are a shite ton of great road trip in a 2-3 hour drive of here.

Weird take...
Baton Rouge is a day drive to Houston, Memphis, Dallas, Florida beaches, and you have world class outdoor access with the Ozarks and the Gulf and wetlands.
