The great Exodus out of Louisiana started before JBE. It started getting the most pub under Jindal when LA homegrown students were getting tops at LSU and the moment they graduate leave the state to work and start a family

I agree the Exodus is a problem. That’s one of the reasons I don’t think highly of Jindal. But JBE isn’t fighting it either.

I'll give two situations:
A. On Monday there were 2,500 in the hospital, Tuesday there were 2,550.
B. ON Monday there were 600 people in the hospital, on Tuesday there were 660.
B is the THE BIGGER SPIKE!! But which one is actually more concerning.
B is more concerning.
It is a 10% uptick vs 2% uptick.

Obviously any hospitalizations are bad, but my issue is that it's misleading. Without diving into the data, someone reads, "Biggest single day spike in hospitalizations since April" Most people will interpret that as we are as bad off now as we were in April, when in reality were looking at 1,500 LESS people in the hospital since that time. We're making progress and heading in the right direction. There is reason for optimism as well as caution, but not when shite stats like SPIKE are making headlines. My job revolves around data analysis, and the way this has been handled is making my brain hurt...it's been sloppy and misleading at best.

Idiots on Facebook are freaking out while ignoring that it took 17,000 tests to gets a little over 1,000 positive results.

So you’ll only care about hospitalization numbers once the total gets over 2000?
That was literally the point of social distancing and all of the closures.
This thing will spread. We only need draconian procedures in place when we are in danger of overwhelming the hospital system.

So you're telling me having 2,550 in the hospital is better than 660??? Keep in mind a SINGLE DAY increase of 50 people does NOT mean we are averaging 50 new people a day.

Well, obviously! We are now, nigh 30 days later, seeing that much hyped Memorial Day spike. They called it...and now it's finally here!
I shite you not my wife was just watching DVR of the Today show and they are attributing the spikes in certain regions to Memorial Day. And yes this was this morning's report

Blanco was much worse than JBE.

No, 2550 in hospitals is worse than 660.
But a 10% daily increase is more concerning than a 2% daily increase.

Same here. Political data framing at its finest unfortunately.
All of this while people are out and about in much larger numbers than the last two months, many more establishments open, etc...

Since june 1st we've tested 41,000 more people this month already than we did the entire month of April, yet we have pretty much the same amount of new cases (11,200ish) and so far our death rate has basically dropped 50% for the third straight month.

Also true...so how is it that they are both the most concerning option? My point is that reporting things like a spike without context like what was given in my question is misleading and irresponsible.
Let me flip it on it's head....In what situation would you be more optimistic that we are coming out the other side of this thing:
A: going from 2,500 in hospital to 2,250 in hospital (A HUGE DROP OF 250 PEOPLE!!!!)
or
B: 300 people in hospital to 290. A reduction of just 10
That huge drop of 250 paints a dramatic picture without a shred of context, but I don't think anyone could argue that B would provide much more optimism than A

Does this look like 2 weeks of consistent increases? We are under where we were at the beginning of June

I've been jumping and screaming that reporting # of new cases needs to be totally scrapped. The only way it ever should be is if the extraneous variable of # of tests remains controlled and constant, which it obviously has not. And that's not even taking into account the fact that you have backlog dumps further clouding the picture.
IMO we should be reporting positivity rate, mortality rate, rolling 7 day hospitalization averages and total # hospitalized. Everything else is a garbage statistic

Hospitalizations are what matters
Cases are meaningless with no context such as severity of symptoms, age, comorbidities etc.
You dont shut down or decide not to move into phase 3 because 100 kids popped positive in Tigerland trying to get their dicks wet

But how can you manipulate the public into thinking we have a try threatening disease if they can’t cherry pick numbers and use them incorrectly?
